I am curently a student studying animal care and i am looking for information of the problems caused by selective breeding in the west highland white terrier. any information would be of much help. thanks.

Hi Guest, I don't breed Westies, but any good breeder would be selective in any breeding they undertook, perhaps you would like to join and let us know what problems you think are or would be caused by the breeder being selective. The whole idea of selective breeding is to avoid problems. So I for one do not understand your question.

Thats why I asked her to e mail me to find out exactly what is meant by selective breeding, does she mean "close breeding" or line breeding. or trying to breed out problems that we know some dogs have !!!!!!! so far no e mail !!!

Thanks Irene, I thought you knew what was meant. To me the very act of breeding is an act of selection. But may be the poster meant chosing one thing, like a show coat, and breeding for that to the exclusion of all other considerations, but I don't think that goes on much these days as we have all learned a lot more about genes and how they work. Would have thought as it is Westies she is talking about it would have been a health problem but who knows unless we have the courtesy of a reply.
