Topic Dog Boards / Health / Urinary tract infection

My 11 year old golden retriever has had a severe urinary tract infection, tests showed no crystals, but a lot of blood and protein. He has been on antibiotics for 3 weeks with one week more to go but tests still show some blood and protein. In himself much improved. Vet says to then wait and see what happens, but seems to think it will recur.

If he was human he could drink Cranberry juice which is wonderful in clearing up waterwork problems,, but obviously he won't drink it. Anybody got any ideas of any natural methods of helping this clear up.

Many thanks
Bobbi

Hi Bobbi,

All I know is less protien and cranberry juice and as much water as the dog will take.

Try and add just a little caranberry juice at a time it is OK for him.

Good luck.

The only thing I can think of is to encourage him to drink and urinate lots. Does he like icecubes? My dogs love them, I know if they need to drink more and are not I offer icecubes and they just gobble them up. Is he on a special diet to help regulate the pH of the urine since it can affect bacterial growth? Hope he gets better, and wish you both the best of luck :)

You may find cranberry juice tablets from Health Food Shops easier to adminster as dogs don't tend to like the taste of cranberry juice :-)

Not only less protien but more easily digested protien as in eggs, dairy products and white meat.Gillian

WE have a dog at work that has this and apart from being fed the vet food hills c/d diet a vet nurse told me she uses vitamin c tablets, it brings the acid levels up in the urine.
