My Hubbys best friend moved in with his girlfriend and 4 girls ( 3 to 9 year old)
6 month ago, they have now decided to get a pup, he has had gordon setters and staffies, she Afgans, ess, collies (not kept any long from what I gather)
they have been offered a pup by the youngests girls dad (mixed up family)
The pup is (so I'm told) WOLFx Huskie x G Shepherd, I have tried to tell them that this is not a good breed to bring into a family with small children, (I've seen the way the little one treats the cat) but got told to but out it was there choice and it was such a fluffy little white thing, if they get this pup I think it will end up like all her other dogs being passed around from one home to the next. I,ve tried talking to her but dont no how to convince her not to take the pup (for the pups sake) and still stay friends.
HELP.

What Country are we talking about :-) ? White & fluffy doesn't entirely sound like the suggested cross, which could well be a plus.

Well the poster is from the UK so I would have thought that may be the friend is to, in which case the puppy will not be a wolf cross. Well dam well should not be. Wolves are only alowed to be kept with a special licence and would not be alowed to be used to cross with a dog. Sall think your friend is being taken for a ride.

I did wonder Jackie, we were talking in the pub last night, her X got 3 dogs mum dad and a pup from the last litter, he was told they were worth £500 each and were called INUITS, the bitch gave birth last week to 8 pups, she has been offered a white bitch puppy for the little girls xmas pressie. What she has told me of her dogs before this Im very worried.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 24.11.02 20:55 UTC
Yes Sall there are a group of people that insist it is a new breed and called Inuits, which is a bit confusing because as you know Inuits = Eskimo and I thought that is what the dogs were but no they reckon they are some sort of wolf cross, I supose we really ought to report the fact that they reckon they are wolf crosses but I'm worried that if they were reported the dogs may be put down and I could not bear that as I doubt the dogs have any more wolf in them than our Elkhounds. Think if you do a search you will find some sites for them.

Thanks Jackie, I still dont think any type of Huskie X Shepperd would put up with a little girl maulling it the way I've seen the cat mauled being carried by one back leg etc.

Hi Jackie,

I was out on a walk with a friend recently when we came across a couple walking their dogs. When we'd passed them, I was asked "Do you know what they were"? I guessed half right - Siberian Husky, the other half I took a lucky guess - Wolf! I was right!!!!!! It was a Wolf x Sib.Husky bitch with her son, don't know what his sire was....so someone out there is breeding them!

The ones I've been talking about are on a caravan site at a village called chaple Hill, I'll have to find out more and try and get an invite to visit them. I no they had 3 homes whilst the bitch was in pup, came from Mansfield first, then 2 homes in Ruskingham then Chaple Hill. Poor things.

Have a look at( sorry cant do links)

Thanks Phill, I knew there was a site some where, but I do doubt that they are wolf crosses, even in the USA when they did a DNA check on the dogs that were suposed to be half or quarter wolf they had a job to find any more wolf DNA than the normal dog.

According to their site they are huskyxGSDxmalamute bred to *look* like wolves - don't seem to claim wolf blood. Some pretty dogs on the site but they just look like cross-bred huskies, GSDs and malamutes to me!

They also state on their site that puppies will only be sold to "permanent responsible homes" adn a couple of litters are listed. Might this family be getting one from one of these breeders? If so it may be worth contacting the breeder - if they are as concerned for the welfare of their new "breed" as they are trying to make out - they would surely not sell a puppy into such an unsuitable environment? Would be interesting to know what they said!

How come wolf X are not allowed? They do make lovely pets, like any animal as long as they are raised with love, understanding, and obedience. Why are people scared of them, and what they don't know of the animal.
I too agree if these people are not very good with animals they should never own an animal of any kind, and never for an x-mas gift. Thats sad.

I've now had a look at some sites, and it looks as if here they are called Utonagan, there breed standerd states then temperament should be exemplary with no hint of aggression?
Also
The utonagan is a man made made dog that has been selectively bred from the Malamute,Husky and GSD. The aim being to create a dog that resembles the wolf as closely as possible.
It makes a loyal companion, but should not be left alone, or keep them with other dogs.
Maybe OK one on one but dosn't sound a family pet?

Because in the UK Wolves are classed as wild animals and you need a special licence to keep them and if you cross one with a dog that cross also needs a licence to be kept, your property is visited to make sure that the enclosures that you keep them in is safe and that neither the wolves nor wolf/dog cross can escape.

Wolves are wild animals, and as such can only be kept by those who have a special license, like Zoos. Hybrids are also covered by this legislation. This is to stop wild animals being kept by the general public as pets in unsuitable conditions.

That makes sense :)

No I agree it sounds as if the family are not that stable, sorry know they are friends, and perhaps any dog would not be a good idea, but certainly not a Sib. or even a GSD. The trouble is I don't think that any responsible breeder would want to place a puppy in the home which means that they will have to buy for a less than satisfactory sorce.
May be you could try the "your being ripped off" line but I doubt if you can say anything to change their minds, if they have made them up, bet they want it for Christmas too. All you can do I'm afraid is to stand by and be ready to help when or if things go wrong.

If they do get it, and yes its an Christmas present for the 3 year old, I,m going to be the one they turn to when it all goes wronge, with pups of my own due Jan (hopefully) I don't want to be taking in another.
Geoffs mate is good with dogs and I no he thinks its a bad idear, but its a new relationship, and im not sure he'll stand up for whats right.

You sound like a good friend to your friends. Keep us updated? Julieann

Oh dear - it's always awful when its friends doing the totally wrong thing, and you cant dissuade them adn have to just stand bu and watch.

Sadly, IMHO if the 3 year old insists on carrying a pup around like the poor cat, then there will be a big vet's bill for - well, a broken leg or something.

My sympathies are with you.
