Topic Dog Boards / Health / Kennel Cough?

Just a passing thought, but as there seems to be quite a few posters dogs with KC at the moment, I wonder if there is a common link. I know some of you live a long way from each other, but have you perhaphs been to the same shows?

Think the link is shows but not the same show, people go to a show the dog picks up the infection goes to the next show and passes it on, some times the owners know the dog is coughing sometimes they don't.
The infection in my breed was picked up at a Scotish Show and the infected dog was shown at the next show before any symptoms were showing and past it on to any number of other hounds.

We don't show Holly so we can't have picked it up that way. The local vet did say that there have been loads of cases lately and she can't work out why it's gotten so bad.

Fiona, of course you are correct, it also spreads through any activity where dogs come into close proximinity. Dog training, Vets, Shopping, Neighbours or even you can bring it back by walking through an area where a dog has coughed whilst out walking. I can be air bourne too but dogs are more likley to catch it that way if they are inside with an infected dog, which is why it is called Kennel Cough, because if you get it in the kennels it will spread right through. There are also several different infective agents involved so it is difficult to treat with an injection or nazal spray before the dog is infected. It is just the same as the cold in humans, you catch it the same way and you can only treat the effects of the infection not the infection itself.

hi phil,
good job i went through all new posts as was going to post about this, my boy has just gone down with it, giving him benalyn for dry coughs is helping to soothe the cough, trying not to let him charge around with the bitch at 30mph around the garden, a pain trying to let them out seperatly as they look to see were the other is and stare and winge at each other through the door.a while back when we were in chat must of been mid oct my bitch was unwell and in all the years i have had dogs have never had kennel cough or seen a dog with it, it sounds like it is rife at the mo, well she did not have the cough but sneezing and snuffles got some antbios and think caught it in time if it was kennel cough, if the boy has it is it likly to reapear in my bitch thinking that she may have had a mild does would she have built up anti bodies for this, can they get it again once they have had it?
this must have a incubation type period of about two to three weeks before the actual symtoms appear, saw on another thread that a two month period of staying away from shows clubs etc was advised, it was noted in the dog papers that terry thorn refused to handle a dog that was coughing at midland counties, my bitch was there but not the dog, refured to a vet clinic book and they suggest to let it run it's course of 10 to 14 days unless the dog goes off there food and is generaly unwell, can affect the young and old more severely. regards tina

Hi Tina, I can only suggest you keep a very careful eye on her!! Sorry if it upsets you, but there are different strains of KC, and unless you are lucky (?) it wont be the same one as she had before. I would say to anyone reading this posting, PLEASE if your dog seems the slightest bit unwell with it,ie quiet, mucus from nose, laboured breathing, get to the vet straight away, particularly if very young, very old, or a deep chested breed. Ive lost two much loved dogs as a result of KC, better to be safe than sorry!!!

thanks phil,
will keep an eye on her, will take the boy if there is no improvment as phoned the vet today and said as long as he was not to bad in himself to let it run it's course, thanks again regards tina

Hi Tina, yes they can get KC more than once unfortunately! There are several different strains of KC just like our colds & flu. Out of my nine dogs 5 have had it 3 times, 2 have had it twice & 2 have never had it although the ones who have had it were all vaccinated against it & the other 2 have not been vacc against it. The 3rd time one of my girls caught it, it went on her chest & she was really poorly with it and she wasn`t old or infirm at the time. I would think it likely your bitch will catch it as it`s highly contagious. Hope they get better soon.
