i took my yorkie to th vet she hurt her paw nothing serious could be grass seed or broken nail and will have to have an anasectic so the vet can look at it properly at the same time he is going to clean her teeth , my esimate is about £150 -200 ,i was quite shocked when the receptionest told me i have to pay in advance on the day . all my 4 dogs are fully insured to take the worries out of these emergencies, with a morgage and other bills to pay . i am with the rspca pet insurance and i am happy with them .am i right to be upset or is this normal procedure at all vets.if your dog is insured you pay first then claim it back from your insurance.because that was not what i was expecting.
thankyou for the replys it has been a great help as this all happened fri eve everywhere closed until monday, regarding teeth cleaning if that will not be covered by insurance could anyone give me a rough estimate of how much that will cost.i have just read my contract and it says does not pay the cost of dental treatment ,poor yorkie mum.

We have been reassured by our insurers that we can request the vet to bill them direct so that we don't have to pay any money up front. We were worried about the same thing as yourself and so we also checked with the vet,(just to be on the safe side :) ), but they also said that they were happy to deal direct with the insurer too. I would query with the vet if that is something they would be prepared to do - I suppose they have to cover themselves from people who don't have any form of insurance. Otherwise, ask the insurance company for their suggestions.
Best of luck!

It is up to the vet whether they will deal with insurance company direct or whether they expect you to pay and then reclaim. Possibly if you take along your insurance policy so that the vet can be certain you are insured the vet will agree to wait for the money. Incidentally it is quite possible that the insurance company will refuse to pay the teeth cleaning element of the bill as this is considered routine and not emergency.
