Hi Sam
not had experience of it in the dog sense !
hubby had it a couple of years ago and it was very painfull ,alot of swelling ,antibiotics and anti-inflammotarys ( SP) and the gland had to be emptied regularly (Yak) it still bothers him now and he still has to empty it now and again
don't know if this helps -if not tell me and I'll delete it before the whole world knows his secrets :D

Hi sis, I had a Wolfie that had this. She had a huge egg shaped swelling on the side of her face, and all the worst thoughts went through my mind. However, it turned out to be a blocked saliva gland. Anti biotics helped initially, but then the swelling returned. Eventually it had to be removed, quite a long op, but totally successful. A drain was left in for about a week, to make sure all gunge drained away, but after that no more trouble at all.

Thanks sis/Liz. Caper has developed one overnight....just to add to my nervous breakdown! Pups are due tomorrow so vet (over the phone) doesn't want to have to start operating....just hoping antibiotics & squeezing (there is a small bite puncture) will keep it under control until she is able to have it opened up. Any further advice appreciated!

We had the same thing with a Cocker - antibiotics helped initially but the lump gradually kept coming back so we opted for the op. As Philippa says, it was a long op & not one that vets do that often (our vet said he usually only did one salivary gland op a year on a dog, if that) but it did cure the problem for good, although our Cocker has been left with a slightly lop-sided face - quite endearing really :-)

Sam as there is a bite it could it be a sub-cutaneous infection rather than a salivary gland one? Don't think you can do anything more except keep a check on Caper's temp. and I'm sure you're doing that anyway. Keep us updated on puppy progress :-).

Definitely in the salivary gland sis...mix of blood/saliva coming out when I drain it.....fills up again within a couple of hours...well you know how she drools! Just hope I can keep it contained long enough for her to have the pups & feed them a bit before she has to have it cut. Had it happen once before with a graas seed blocking it. (different bitch.)
