Topic Dog Boards / Health / Sneeze but not ill ?

I wonder if any of you have ever experienced this or if you have any suggestions.

Phoebie has the last few days started to sneeze. She only seems to do it when excited or exerting herself though - when you get up in the morning, play with her, get her out her pen when she has been on her own for a little while.

When quiet and once walking round the garden she doesn't do it. In the past the only time she has done it is when her and Sam play and she screws her face up and this has sometimes prompted a sneeze.

In herself she is fine (no cough or runny nose or anything) and no signs of any sneezing from Sam.

I've tried to look up her nose and can't see anything up there and we haven't just changed bedding, washing powder, cleaning products or anything like that that may have set her off.

She is wandering about right now with no sneezing at all but if I go and play with her she starts up again - they are not deep from the chest sneezes but more like a puff of air out her nose ( like just the last bit of a sneeze we do)
I hope that makes sense.

I am suppossed to be at a show Saturday but I'm worried about if I should go. One big concern is that when we first arrive at a show she pulls for 5 mins or so and this makes her cough and what with the sneezing too people will probably think I have taken a dog with KC !!!!

Has anyone any ideas what it may be and should I definately stay in with her till it's gone? If she is still like it in a couple of days I was going to get the vet to check her out but wondered what any of you may suggest.

just a thought her last exposure to other dogs or places other dogs go was 8 days ago - Sam has not been anywhere either to be carrying anything.

Sara it could be that she has been sniffing around in some mouldy hay or something like that, it could be some sort of chemical or spray, but it's probably kennel cough. Sorry.

It does sound like kennel cough at the start Sara, I have just had it in my house a few weeks ago and they all starting by sneezing when excited or overexerting themselves.

It was like an old man sneeze

ohhh dear I had a horrible feeling that might be the answers I got :(

Jackie - I'll make a phone call now as there's only one place she could have got it unless some dogs up the road have it and it's come in here airborne :(

I'll keep you posted

Pepper the Yorkie used to sneeze when she was happy or excited---also when she recognized whoever was at the door and switched from warning bark to happy sneezing  Never did figure out why and eventually just accepted it as "her". I always wondered if her name had something to do with it :P

Since it's something that's recent, I would have it checked out :)
good luck,
toodles

Ben sneezes when he's playing, and always when he jumps up on my bed to say hello in the morning while he's squirming around on his back, making himself comfortable!:) Like Sara's Pepper, though, he's always done it.

I'd like to be able to say she always done it too but apart from when she screws her nose up at Sam and then sneezes she hasn't.

This is the 2nd day of it now :( Looking at KC incubation she is about on target for the cough to start if it is that (not that I'm paranoid or anything  ) If it is that I have to admit I am a bit fed up as we had 4 weeks grounded due to season - take one trip out with other dogs and then bang :(

Might turn out yet that she has snuffed something up her nose and it's tickling her but not that easy to see up a wriggling 10 month olds nose

I'll ring my vet tomorrow and get some benilyn in incase.

Hi Sara,

Hopefully it will turn out not to be kc.
I used Potters vegetable cough mixture (holland and barrett sell it) instead of benylin recently and it seemed to work better. hopefully tho you won't need it
