With respect Guest, it really doesn't work like that:-(

Have you joined the Alaskan Malamute Club?

Have you been to any Shows where the breed is being judged? And talked to the people there

Have you met any Owners (not necessarily breeders) of these dogs and been round to visit them in a home environment?

Have you contacted, personally, any of the Breeders listed on Champ Dogs, other than in your blanket e mail?

The breed probably has an 18 month waiting list, homes are severley vetted to make sure they are suitable and that potential owners have an idea of what they are letting themselves in for.

Malamute breeders do not have to go looking for homes, they usually have a list.

Please do register for this board where you will meet a lot of Mal owners who can help you find out if this is the breed for you, by the sound of it you do need to find out an awful lot more, and kiss goodbye to any thoughts of a puppy by Christmas

You should check out their websites, do some research into their breed lines etc. My personal favourite is on your list but you should really make that desicion for yourself. The breed club will also help you meet people with mals. Get as much experience of the breed as possible. I can't think of any malfolk who wouldn't be more than happy to talk to you about mals. Realistically you should expect to wait 1yr-3yrs for a mal, if you get one any quicker you're very lucky or you've been had.
Good Luck
Julie :)

Hi Lina, unfortunately, you are very unlikely to have a mal by this Christmas, and would be very lucky to have one by next Christmas. Breeders of mals just don't have puppies going spare, they have a waiting list before their dogs are even mated! You must be prepared to wait. It is worth it if it really is the breed for you.

I would suggest the following:
1. Read up as much as you can about the breed.
2. Look at the Malamute Club of Great Britain site www.malamute47.freeserve.co.uk and see what you would be getting into.
3. Write to individual breeders, asking to go on their waiting list. Be prepared to travel to see them and discuss the breed and why you want one.
4. Find out if anyone near you has a malamute you can see.
5. Go to LKA and see the malamutes there and talk to people. Please be prepared to be asked to come back later after classes are over.

A few things to think over:
1. These dogs are not safe to let run free in a park. They can show aggression to other dogs, even the bitches. If not aggressive in themselves, they will respond quickly to another dog growling at them.
2. They howl, yodel and talk to themselves and anyone else. I would not recommend one in a flat.
3. They can be VERY difficult to train. You have to persuade them that they want to do what you want.
4. They are very destructive. I have had walls chewed back to the breeze blocks, doors and furniture chewed through, paint and wallpaper stripped off, garden demolished..... the list is endless. Anyone else with a mal can tell you similar stories.
5. They are very big dogs.
6. They moult horrendously twice a year. You cannot see carpets (if you insist on keeping such an item) and have balls of fluff and fur travelling round your home like tumbleweed from western films.
7. Most do not like central heating. Buy warm clothing.

Having said all this, I am on my third and wouldn't have any other breed!

You can e-mail me if you want any further information, or pictures of my current beast.

Hi Lina,

As I mentioned in our phone conversation earlier today, you will need to make contact with breeders and arrange to visit them. Only then will they consider putting you on their waiting list, which as I said can be fairly long. You really don't stand much chance of getting a pup *NOW* from a reputable breeder.
Please don't be in too much of a rush to find a pup, make sure the breeder eye tests and hip scores the parents and steer well clear of any breeder that doesn't work or show their dogs. I would also advise you to choose a breeder who is a member of the Malamute Club of GB.
Have you contacted Roger yet?

Don't forget LKA next month. If you can make it it will give you an excellent opportunity to meet lots of breeders and owners as well as the dogs.

Jacquie.

hi, if you can make it theres going to be a number of mals and owners at the Nordic show in Coventry this saturday.

As everyone has said theres waiting lists as long as your arm.

It is really the best thing to do and go to meet people and the mals. Its what Liza and I did, for several months, have many books about the mal, and then trawled the net looking at mal sites etc.

The Nordic is held at the Sky Blue Connexion, Main Hall. Rytone on Dunsmore
saturday 23/11/02
Show opens 9.30, judging commences at 10.30

Alaskan Malamutes are on at 10.30

Greenland dogs (aka Eskimo dogs, not Canadian Eskimo dogs) 13.30

Hope to see you at the show.

Jay & Liza

p.s. please please please dont be tempted to get one out of exchange and mart, or any other publication like that, you have no idea what your buying, and i think everyone can back me in that. There are a number of very dodgy people who say they have mal pups and they some sort of cross with something!!!

I second that about Exchange and Mart. I have chatted to a girl who bought her mal that way and has had no end of trouble. It wasn't registered with the KC, it cost far more than from a reputable breeder and she has been told that it may have hip displaysia.
It really is worth waiting for a good puppy from a ggod breeder.
