Given that some people (like us) might look for an older dog to adopt, do you think it would be a good idea for Champdogs to have a section for these, rather than just for puppies?

I think that’s a really good idea. It would be preferable to them ending up on a site like Gumtree or others like it. There are plenty of people who could give a secure, knowledgeable home to an oldie, who might check in here from time to time.

Thanks Rozzie.   Hopefully this suggestion can be taken up.

Think its a brilliant idea have a neighbour just now looking for a "older" dog having just lost her own at 12 she is baffled where to go. Her recently past dog was a young adult the breeder has passed away so no go through that route. I spoke to her yesterday and I was flumoxed as to where to tell her to go - bar the dogs home. So that would be a brilliant idea.

Would that be for purebred dogs only or any over a certain age ? There is the oldies rescue who work with rescues trying to rehome rescues .
What about breed rescues do they not get older dogs

Links to the various breed rescues would be helpful; they often have older dogs needing homes.

I have found many don't realise there are breed rescues.  I also think its a shame many general rescues don't work with breed rescues.  Feel strongly that's it better for the dogs

Would the oldies group include breeders who need or want to rehome
Amy if theirs ?

https://www.oldies.org.uk/

This Oldies Club might be of interest?

As for not realising there are Breed Rescues - many Shelters actively won't liase with breed rescues I've found and that's just too bad as many breed rescues have people on their books, looking to adopt an oldie of a specific breed.    The Welsh Rescue I worked with (home checker) aren't interested in contacting a breed rescue despite my pointing them to such places.   I guess they want the income from adoption fees.

That was what i was referring to earlier mamab.  I agree rescue rarley seem to liase with breed clubs riduloua when you consider breeds have their own characteristics best handled by those who known the breed so the most suitable homes are found
I've wondered if its money.

Had forgotten the oldies club Thank you MamaBas

My neighbours two daughters have contacted two breed rescues on her behalf she has had both breeds in her life and neither breed rescue contacts were very helpful or forthcoming, as her one daughter said "they may of being having a bad day but puts you off contacting again".

Her Mom my neighbour (who wants needs a dog) is struggling with telephone calls due to a new hearing aid called a BAHA, so the daughters are doing initial contacting.

Oddly and very sadly both received similar reactions (not good ones) from breed rescue. The one breed rescue person just said to her elder daughter "call back when we have suitable/available dogs" and hung up without telling them how they were to know they had available suitable dogs, in as dogs are not listed on their website.  The other daughter had short shrift saying "we have nothing suitable"

Does not encourage you to be trying again does it.

Kazz - hum.   When I was actively looking for an older Basset, after we lost Frankie, although I am pals with the main Breed Welfare rep. down here and she was looking out for an oldie for me, I contacted another BR and frankly was actually upset by their attitude especially when they discovered I was a retired breeder.   I think that had to do with them being on the receiving end of hounds who probably shouldn't have been bred .... ' nasty breeders'!  Happily it didn't matter as I lucked into our lovely Mo who doesn't have a nasty bone in his body.   His main problem stemmed from what I believed, was a lack of socialisation - being a kennel-dog.  Once we sorted out his problems with that, it's been all good.

I spoke to her daughter today she told them first off the dog was not for her but for her elderly mother - she thinks alarm bells went off - as she said they could of had a bad day.
