Topic Dog Boards / General / Waiting Lists

Hi everyone
I'm looking for some advice regarding waiting lists for a puppy and contact from the breeder.
I'm currently on two waiting lists for a labrador puppy.
Both breeders said they will get back to me when they are able to offer a puppy.
The first litter was born September but I've heard nothing.
The second in october  and again I've heard nothing.
Should I contact breeders again? I don't want to appear a pest but id like to know either way if there's a puppy for us. Do they usually contact you even if they can't offer one? How long after they are born should I expect to be contacted?
We would just rather know as we can look elsewhere if we need to.
Any advice would be appreciated
Many thanks in advance

If these litters weren't due until say late September or into October, it may still be early days for either breeder to know what they will have available.  They are bound to be busy too!!

You might pick up the phone, rather than sending an email, and enquire how things are looking re a puppy for you.  I tended not to phone people on my waiting list until our litters were properly established and I knew what I might have available and I can't remember calling anybody if I didn't have a puppy available.    Just a word of caution - I liked to think my puppy enquiries came from people who really wanted my lines/type, so I'd not mention 'looking elsewhere'!

Yes, I would contact them again.  Although they will be busy, they should have started to think about potential owners/visits etc

I tell the people on my lists as soon as litter has been delivered safely and mum settled - most of them are so excited and want to know if there's a pup for them.  Obviously if you have a litter that has more of one sex than the other, it's better to let people know as soon as possible so they can look elsewhere.

Many thanks for the reply.
That's how I thought it would work. That we'd be informed either way.
It's quite a long waiting game so I'd have no problem if they  haven't got a pup at this time I'd just like to know either way.
I thought if we had been successfull we would be getting updates etc by now.
I just don't want to pester them at what must be a busy time for them.

Were you able to make contact with them?

If you're on a waiting list for a puppy and the litter is born, I'd have thought you be told within a week of that if there is a puppy for you or not - if not within a few days.

You might not know exactly which one it will be, yet, but should know if there is one for you...

Many thanks for that. That's how I thought it would work that I'd be told one way or the other.
Just a bit frustrating not knowing what to do next.

I think you'll find most breeders prefer to have their litters on the ground and established before promising anybody a puppy!  So much can go wrong immediately post whelping

Absolutely. Not usually until the eyes are open.
