Now the AHT has closed, where do people get their tests done?
- By RozzieRetriever Date 10.03.22 16:32 UTC Upvotes 2
I used Laboklin. Very happy with their service.

Embark for breeders
https://embarkvet.com/breeders/
- By chaumsong Date 11.03.22 22:39 UTC
I like embark too, every possible dna test in one along with lots of other useful (and useless) results  It is expensive but they often have sales, worth keeping an eye on the website.

Does embark do individual DNA screening eg PRA, CNM etc, or do you have to get the full kit?
Also, do you now if their results are accepted by the KC?
- By chaumsong Date 12.03.22 10:32 UTC Edited 12.03.22 10:35 UTC Upvotes 1
It's the full kit and yes they are accepted by the KC. I really like that they test for everything, it might throw up something you weren't aware of in the breed or your lines.

Embark do lack some tests though, can't remember offhand but because of that I use My Dog DNA. (An essential breed one was not offered.) They were taken over by Wisdom but you can still find their original tests for everything minus breed detection (which is pointless if you have a pedigree dog anyway) and get about 200 tests for approx. £80 and accepted by KC. I will find the link after Crufts.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.03.22 12:22 UTC
It works out cheaper at $150 plus £10 return postage, than the KC multi test, which is £135 for just 3 tests for our breed.

As you say they regularly have discounts on that.price, and it's  cheaper regularly more you test in one go.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.03.22 12:25 UTC Edited 13.03.22 12:28 UTC
Unfortunately you need to be very careful with wisdom.

The MyDogDNA is what we used, as it was.Helsinki university that discovered our breeds Glaucoma gene variant, but since it was bought by Mars and rebranded they are using the WRONG test for Glaucoma, lumping all the Glaucoma breeds under one test.

The Norwegians have had to warn the breeds owners not to use them, as their test is wrong for Glaucoma.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.03.22 12:31 UTC
They do the whole panel of tezts, highlighti g the ones specific to the breed.

So I get prcd-PRA, Glaucoma, Dwarfism (CDSL), us the rest thrown in including DM.

You just send (email) results  to KC and they are put on record if KC recognise the testing for your breed.

I think it depends on what tests you need and the breed you have. What I need for my breed I can't get the lot with some mentioned. I usually opt for Laboklin as they do the lot

Thanks guys. One of my dogs is hereditary clear of the main tests for his breed, but I have been asked to do another individual test so didn't really want to repeat the others.
I did email Embark and they seemed unsure as to whether the KC accept their results or not- quote " you can directly reach out to them and ask if they will accept our results"
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 14.03.22 20:38 UTC Upvotes 1
I used MyDogDNA for River (papillon) and I had to email the results document to the KC, but they put the info on his page within a day.

I chose them partly because Goldmali recommended them, but also because they offer coat colour genetics as well as loads of other traits like long hair, shortened muzzle, heavy shedding, etc. I’m a bit of a geek for genetics so there was no competition for me - a huge bundle including loads of non-health stuff for me to be fascinated by, cheaper than the  small set of tests offered in the KC package.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 14.03.22 21:22 UTC
I cam confirm that the KC do accept their results.

include all those traits too.

An amusing aspect is that on each dogs profile they give the equivalent human age, bit of fun.

So my 7 1/2 month old = 15 human years, and then9 1/2 month old is sweet 1..6

The MyDogDNA is what we used, as it was.Helsinki university that discovered our breeds Glaucoma gene variant, but since it was bought by Mars and rebranded they are using the WRONG test for Glaucoma, lumping all the Glaucoma breeds under one test.

Have you checked if this is only when it's sold as Wisdom Panel? It's really bad if they use the wrong test! Like I said you can still get MyDogDNA, and I was surprised to see that the samples were sent to Scotland. I sent DNA off on the 2nd of March, got an email saying they had been received the very next day, and yesterday the 14th I got the results so I was very pleased with that. Interestingly, one of the dogs came back as a carrier of a condition not yet known in the breed as far as I am aware, so I'm very glad I had all the tests done. I also really like knowing things like whether they carry the gene for rear dewclaws or not, it's a useful bonus. In all 211 genetic conditions tested for plus lots of others for coat, colour, body shape etc.

Try checking via this link which for some reason doesn't seem to be publicised but is the one I used -and the testing kits I received were branded as MyDogDNA and not Wisdom -even though the results are on the Wisdom website. I ended up paying a lot less for 2 dogs having 211 health related DNA tests each, than I would have done for just 3 tests each from most other labs.  https://mydogdna.com/products/mydogdna

What annoys me is that the KC does not publish all important results. I have 2 dogs of 2 different breeds that each are a carrier of one condition that is NOT published as it is not part of the breed recommended tests. Surely if they are carriers it means it is something that should be monitored closely? Likewise in my main breed there is a condition that it has been established does exist in it, and in fact in that breed alone. Again the KC do not publish the results. I'm lucky in that all dogs I've tested for it have been clear BUT a friend has come across several carriers and would have done a carrier x carrier mating unintentionally had she not found out the dogs were carriers. And this is a fatal condition. She will not use a stud dog not tested for it (and a lot of other conditions) yet it appears that most breeders are not willing to pay out to do the tests. That puts her in a very difficult situation as currently she is extremely limited with stud dogs.

I agree Goldmali, I’d prefer to have more information than less and I wouldn’t complain if the KC published the results of hundreds of tests for each dog even if most of them are irrelevant.

It’s only recently that vWD has been listed for paps and that’s only because a few people basically hassled the KC and said look, my dog’s tested as a carrier so we definitely have it in the breed. My own boy is a carrier too.

I also want to see FVIII results, I suspect that will be the next one we need to include in the core tests.

And if a dog has colour tests, why not publish those results too? I know breeding for colour is frowned upon but people still do it, why not give them the information they need to make informed breeding choices? And we could work out where incorrect colours are coming from and avoid pairings that are likely to produce them.

Similarly it would be very helpful to include tests for merle because of the health problems associated with double merle, especially as merle can be cryptic and a dog with one copy can look totally non-merle. And you do NOT want to be accidentally breeding that dog to another merle.

I kept the Glaucoma and dwarfism results for our breed for 5 years.

KC only made it official 2020.

Definitely issues with Wisdom panel,  and in USA they can't  get. MyDogDNA directly, when I tried it kept directing me to Wisdom.

Embark offer all the extras too,  200+ dna conditions.

Regarding Embark,  $149 basic price without discounts. It cost me £10 to return signed for at the post office.

A sample report.

There are 3 report formats to choose from,  and the OFA one is most suitable to send to KC.

You can search for conditions here: https://embarkvet.com/products/dog-health/health-conditions/

This link from the menu,  Explore the science/forbreeders/healthconditions, https://embarkvet.com/breeders/health/ https://embarkvet.com/breeders/health/ lets you search by breed

If you live in the UK, do you order the Embark test from the usual US website? (I see it is also for sale on Amazon.)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 18.03.22 12:53 UTC
I ordered direct using PayPal,  who paid in dollars.

Great thanks. So it ships from US to UK?
