Topic Dog Boards / Health / Hot Spot at base of tail - any at home stuff I can use?
- By Whatdog [gb] Date 21.09.21 14:38 UTC
My dog now has an area at the base of his tail & just above his anus that has hard crusty lumps on.  Today it is red raw and he's been licking it without me seeing.
I've just sprayed some pet Tea Tree spray on it and put a doughnut collar on him.  Is there anything else that I can use, either at home or that I can buy online without a prescription?
How about Lanacane & such like?
What with his tooth/gum & now this, I really feel sorry for the poor boy.

Calendula cream is great.

Try to get it as dry as possible, I use antiseptic powder or green clay. Trim as much excess hair away to allow air to circulate. My GR had one there last year which became very inflamed and in the end I had to get some cream from the vet which was like magic. See if the powder or clay will work, but if it gets too bad then it may mean spending money at the vets.

If it is a hot spot then keeping it dry is the most important thing. Shave it if possible and wash in dilute hibiscrub then dry with a hairdryer on a cool setting. Keep it dry and stop him licking it. I wash twice a day and dry thoroughly

I've put a bit of hydrocortisone cream on it & will keep the collar on so he cant lick it. Just until I can get some antibacterial powder.
Do you think the cream will help? It's not dry but he really doesnt like me touching it so shaving & or washing is a no no at the moment.

I use hibiscrub - use several times a day and hopefully it will soon heal over.  No need to shave area

Shave around the area so you have a clear margin then clean with diluted hibiscrub. Pat dry then pat Flowers of Sulphur onto the area.

Thanks everyone.  I thought I had some hibiscrub but didn't (have ordered some to come tomorrow).  So I used a very mild solution of Dettol to clean it and then coated it with the antibacterial powder.  He didn't seem so agitated when I was cleaning it, so I think the hydrocortisone cream I put on last night must have helped to calm it down.
He's still in the doughnut collar just in case he feels like chewing at it.

I just did a search and found this link which may help?  I seem to remember using a diluted salt solution with our occasional problems but for sure, always have some Hibiscrub to hand.

You may find your dog would benefit from a/bs to aid healing.

Whenever we’ve had to resort to a vets for a hot spot it’s never been a/b’s, just steroids and the Betafuse cream. It’s a skin reaction rather then an infection in most cases.
Goldens seem rather prone to them although this is the first one I’ve had that has suffered from them. In general it seems to be due to an allergic reaction, but in Isla it’s seems to be due to skin being damaged rather then an allergy. Consequently she has only had three.

Thanks for the info.  We started a course of antibiotics (Zodon) for something else (see my other post re dental abscess) so perhaps they might help.
He seems to be ok at the moment, not scooting his tail on the ground or anything like that so I think I'll persevere with the home methods for the time being and see how we get on.

I use Vetzyme wound powder for them.  I get it in Pets at Home.  It dries and soothes the area well.
