I would like my dog to become a stud, I cannot find a proper of fit place to show him and receive offers. This is my first time so could anyone advice or direct me what is the proper way of breeding and if there is any vital information I should know?
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

You enter championship dog shows or field trials to prove his worth; that's the bitch owners shop window so to speak. You also need to xray hips and elbows for scoring, have eye testing carried out by a veterinary eye specialist and then look into what DNA tests are recommended.

There are so many nice Golden stud dogs around it is hard to 'encourage' people to use your dog over others available.

He certainly needs to be seen in the show ring as well as all relevant health checks done with excellent results.

Can I start by warning you that owning a dog who has been allowed to be used at stud may not be for the faint-hearted.  In fact once used, he may well start looking for the next bitch which, unless he is a well known dog, with significant wins in the ring, or whatever else he competes in won't be there.  People often see a nice youngster and head off to use his father too!

Can I ask why you think this is a good idea?

Are you experienced enough to know if anybody with a bitch approaches you to use him at stud, has a bitch who has his quality or better, and that the pairing would produce top quality puppies?  Breeding isn't just putting Dog A to Bitch B by a long way, remembering that the owner of the stud dog is 50% responsible for the puppies he produces.    And I might add if things go wrong, people tend to blame the stud dog!!

I had a couple of boys at public stud to approved bitches,  BUT in truth, I turned away more enquiries, than I accepted, knowing the bitches were not going to nick with either boy.

So this is something you really need to give a lot of thought to, and get him scored, Hips and Elbows and other things that need testing for within the breed.

The results for Hip & Elbow scoring have to be within certain limits, the hips should be below the breed median & only dogs with 0 scored elbows should be bred from.

Only dogs with clear results for eyes should be bred from & they have to be screened every 12 months.

DNA testing only dogs who test normal for genetic conditions should ideally be bred from, however a carrier can bred from to a normal without the risk of producing affected offspring, but this type of breeding does run the risk of spreading the condition if in the future two carriers are not DNA tested & bred together. All puppies from a carrier to normal mating have to be DNA tested to confirm their status

As well as the hip, elbow, and eye testing (including gonioscopy) mentioned above he will should be DNA tested for GR-PRA1, GR-PRA2 and ITC-A.

Any bitch used for breeding should also have these tests done as well.
