Hi All
We currently have our bitch due to give birth on Saturday of next week.
She has had her first CHV dose on day ten after mating and she was due to have her second vaccination today.
On arriving at the vets this morning we were told that they couldn't do it as the vaccine is on back order and they cant get it in stock.
There seems to he a problem as all the vets we have called today don't stock it and cant get it.
Does anyone know a vet in the east Midlands or surrounding that keeps a stock of it, we don't mind travelling.
Also, what is the latest we can give the 2nd dose as we are running out of time.
Thanks

The datasheet says that the second dose should be given between 1 and 2 weeks before the expected date of whelping. So if she's due next Saturday, then this Saturday would be the last chance.
Hi,
That was my understanding that we have until Saturday.
I have found a repro vet near Sheffield that has in stock but wont take on new registrations so another dead end.
My vet always gets in the 2 doses for me and holds the 2nd dose. So they wouldn't give one without the second.
However, if it helps, I decided not to give the 2nd dose this last litter. I just didn't want to schlep a heavily pregnant dog to the vets in a heat wave, so I decided not to give it. And all was fine.
Hi
I was under the impression he would have held the 2nd one as well but obviously he didnt, or maybe he did and then used it for another customer due to the supply issues.
I will ring a few more and if I cant find someone we will do without it and cross our fingers like you it all goes well and she has some protection from the 1st one.
Thanks
The first one protects the pups in utero from being absorbed or aborted due to herpes being contracted during pregnancy. So you've already had the benefits of that one.
The second jab protects the pups in the first 3 weeks of life, before they are able to maintain their own body temperature, and from the bitch passing herpes onto them at this time. So they don't really work by boosting each other so much as each jab has a different use.
If you can't get the second jab, just be sure to keep the bitch away from other dogs and their urine/faeces for the first 3 weeks of the puppies' lives. Once they can maintain their own temperature, they will be able to beat herpes even if they get it. TBH, you will probably be fine...
