Hi , my bitch has recently absorbed her whole litter. I have been advised it could be because her progesterone level dropped suddenly.  He said she perhaps needs a progesterone injection to keep the level up next time . My vet doesn't know anything about this . Do any of you?

I have a friend who on the advice of a repro vet got a prescription for the progesterone only pill, her own vet was unsure and made her sign a disclaimer. Her girl has safely carried and delivered a healthy litter.

ETA- did you use the Canine Herpes Vaccine?  Herpes is the most common cause of reabsorbtion

That sounds hopeful. I will try and find a repro vet. This was her second litter she absorbed one from the first litter.
Thank you

No she  didn't have the herpes vaccine but she will next time . She has had all her health tests.

My vet did a progesterone test (when we went in for the first herpes jab) to ensure levels were high enough to support the pregnancy. Had they not been he said she would have needed an injection. Vet is a repro specialist.

When I had a girl who missed a few times the repro vet suggested herpes vaccine as soon as she comes into season not after mating. Also said test progesterone levels 2 weeks ans 4 weeks after mating. A repro vet can organise progesterone in oil to supplement if levels have dropped. Never needed it but did do the 2 progesterone tests and levels remained high enough

Thank you, how did you find your repro vet?
- By Sue Beswick [gb] Date 26.06.21 12:47 UTC
That's very helpful thanks. Repro vets seem to be hard to find . My vet wasn't very helpful with finding one

Google repro vets. There is one in the South, one near the Welsh border, one in Cambridge, one in the North West and i know of one in Edinburgh

Will do . Cambridge wouldn't be too far
