Topic Dog Boards / General / Puppy dating service!

Noticed a lot of Beverley Cuddy’s efforts to promote this service she is associated with, Tailwise.

She calls it “doggy dating”, so matching people to pre screened breeders. But these people are getting a video call and not a home checked. It’s all focused on “shutting puppy farmers out”. And from what I can say she’s talking about home breeders being “elite”. Yet in my breed some of the key people driving health and diversity have their dogs kennelled at night.

Any service to reduce scams I think is welcomed but BC is talking about promoting the efforts in Austria to remove dogs from online advertising at all. It’s now in her interests of course to say this now and I don’t understand how she’s qualified to say all of this.

Interested to know others thoughts. By the way it’s apparently free for breeders but they charge puppy buyers £95 for the advice.

as someone who does not breed and buys when vacancy for a new dog I would not use the service.  I do not wish to be grilled by a third party as well as the breeder and I do not want my choice of litters restricted to what they think is suitable nor do I fancy paying £95 for being interviewed and having choice cut.

Also having looked at the site a few months ago unless they have altered it drastically it looked more like a hand holding service for back yard pet breeders breeding their dog for first time. encouraging people who know very little to breed.  The site read badly as if the authors did not know much about dogs which does not give me confidence they know enough to do any worthwhile screening or either buyers or sellers.

That was my thought exactly, I get for brand new puppy buyers who don’t have a clue, but £95 is a lot of money. I’m sure their business model has been based on that being a 5-10% of the average puppy price, but they need to “introduce” a lot of puppies if that’s the case.

Every time I see that name, I'm afraid I see red.    And as such, wouldn't go within half a mile of her.

I would ask why you think being kennelled at night is not right - kennelled as in crated, or as with the bigget breeders, shut in an outside purpose built kennel?   Provided the dogs are in good surroundings, watered and heated where necessary, I have no issue with being kennelled at night - any more than I have with using a crate at night

I just took a look at her website - no thank you!    One of the things I work hard on when I had a litter to home, was to build a bond with who I let have my precious puppies.   A friendship which for the most part, I did.  Without having a third party involved.

Asking money to do that sounds not a lot different to any other money-making scam.

Waste of money all round. So let's say a puppy buyer paid the fee. Get grilled by this 3rd party and then go to a breeder who grills and says no and so on. Its a money making scheme in my eyes and nothing more. How will the scheme vet breeders, whats the basis going to be that they look at. Dogs living in kennels or homes? Where pups are raised? Health tests? Will they look at all tests, some, results of the tests? Temperament too? What about sound structure of the dogs of the breeder.

Too many variables.

Ideally we want the KC to make health testing mandatory then at least its a step in the right direction

Mamabas for clarity I was saying that BC has been saying home breeders are elite and in some of her FB posts was suggesting this service will only accept people who keep their dogs in the home and not kennels, when some of the best breeders who do the most to preserve and develop our breeds kennel their dogs at night (so would be ‘excluded’). I understand a lot of the licensed breeders have been complaining too saying that those who have to be licensed despite having under the litter threshold are being made to seek like puppy farmers, when at least they are vet inspecy d which this service does not do. Although you have to send a photo of the front of your house haha.

According to BC they look at all of that...and discuss it all on a zoom call. Personally I think she is so much at the ‘consumer’ end of the dog world I don’t see how she can make appropriate judgements.

MamaBas:  > I would ask why you think being kennelled at night is not right

I can't tell you how much of a difference it makes for someone to realise as you do that not all dogs are suited to sitting on laps, sofas, centrally heated houses with soft furnishings all round and are expected to live their lives as 'human children'.

Crates are our animals 'safe place' where they take their treats to eat alone, are their preferred place to hide their toys and when the door is shut at bed time - feel secure and safe to have a contented night's sleep.

My 'night time' kennelled dogs have individual purpose built sleeping areas with deep wood shavings for bedding, heat lamps and thermometers to record each areas temperature and automatic drinkers providing fresh water at all times.

Until this thread came to light, I had no idea who this woman was nor the existence of her website and we sometimes argue amongst ourselves on the Forum  ... maybe our anger re breeding principles should be directed as websites such as 'waggy tails'?  - just a thought.

That was jamima Harrison. Beverly cuddy is editor of dogs today (i think another dog mag too)

yes it was JH but reading this Beverly Cuddy seems to be supporter of pde

Interestingly Ms Cuddy used to show & breed Bearded Collies & worked for the KC. Some of her dogs were the most highly inbred Bearded Collies of their time, making her someone of a hypocrite, when supporting Ms Harrison.

Her last registered Bearded Collie had a COI of over 17-although she didn't breed her her pedigree goes back to her dogs

Some of her dogs COI are not recorded because they don't have fully computerised pedigrees

Not surprised she is promoting this money making scheme

For some reason I'd totally forgotten about Jemima Harrison who was responsible for Pedigree Dogs because it was BC who waded in, especially vs my main breed.

Whoops, got the two confused - both as bad as each other though.
- By furriefriends Date 29.01.21 14:01 UTC
I think at one point jh or her family bred flat coats
- By Ann R Smith Date 29.01.21 16:15 UTC
She's never bred a litter, but has been importing "rescue" black retriever type crosses for a long time from before the PDE program, perhaps that is where the confusion lies.
Her family had Great Danes, English Setters & Labradors, she now has a Flatcoat, BC & some mongrels/crossbreeds.
- By furriefriends Date 29.01.21 16:23 UTC
Yes I am  aware of her black retriever x rescue many of whom seem to be from Ireland .and  that she has a fcr. Looking again i was mistaken about breeding  as u say
