Hey everyone, I've had someone offer me a "silver dapple" male dachshund...thoughts? What is a "silver" dapple, sounds like a bad combination to me?
- By Crazy dog lady [gb] Date 09.12.20 20:18 UTC Edited 09.12.20 20:21 UTC
I've heard the term used for horses but never dogs before. In horses it's a dark grey with lighter spots/patches. Do they mean merle?

Merle is known as Dapple in Dachshunds.

Thanks, it's not my breed so didn't know that. That's good to know

If my understanding of some reading i have done previously is correct breeding a dapple  to dapple can produce puppies with deafness .
Similar to double merle in other breeds.
Happy to be corrected if I have got that wrong

You are correct Merle/Dapples should not be bred to another Merle/Dapple.

http://www.doggenetics.co.uk/doublemerle.html

If I am not mistaken the Kennel Club will not register dapple/merle to dapple/merle pups, trying to find it on the new site, seen ref to it being banned in 2012.

It's probably a blue dapple, they can be grey, and I guess grey can be called silver, although pretty they can come with health problems related to the dilute gene, I would walk away.

A silver dapple dachshund is basically a merle black and tan, not dilute.

It’s another one of those confusing names, unfortunately!

The geneticist in me cringes every time I hear “blue merle” because blue merles aren’t blue, they’re black-based. True blue-based merle is called slate merle!

Thanks brainless.
This link is useful gives and article on merle https://dachshundbreedcouncil.wordpress.com/2015/07/04/double-trouble-can-you-spot-the-dapple-dachshund/
My concern would alsp be do they know what health tests were done ?
If not although u would not breed there still is a risk of health problems for a to be considered

thanks everyone.

It instantly got my spidey-senses going and I told him I was not interested. TBH it's not worth the risk in my opinion, the thoughts that it would cause the pups to suffer down the road doesn't bear thinking about. My own little JRT is from a bad breeder and he's in such pain now with his little legs and his back. Thanks for backing up my initial thoughts!!

Usually good breeders will be breeding the correct colours. Its a fad colouring that many like to breed because it sells.

Silver dappel is an accepted colour in dachshunds. It's merle on a black n tan.  You can get silver dapple and chocolate dapple, it also lists red dapple as breed standard but don't see how merle would show on a solid red.
Blue dapple, issabella dappled and any dapple in pied is not accepted.
- By suejaw Date 10.12.20 18:02 UTC
OK. They aren't accepted in the show ring though which is why I wondered the reason for breeding for this pattern
- By Silverleaf79 [gb] Date 10.12.20 18:11 UTC
You almost never see a dapple in the show ring because they just don’t do well, with red/shaded red and black+tan being much preferred.

There are four variations on silver dapple allowed in the breed standard:
Silver Dapple & Cream
Silver Dapple & Cream Brindle
Silver Dapple & Tan
Silver Dapple & Tan Brindle
