Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Was this a slip ?

Hi all

Looking for a bit of reassurance - my bitch day 15 - in standing heat.
The stud mounted her and penetrated, he was doing the dance - very vigorous thrusts and was literally all paws off the ground almost on her back. His back flattened out (of that helps)  (He is an inch n half shorter)

Once he stopped thrusting, at the point of turning, he slipped out fully engorged and bulbous glandis enlarged, he was dripping creamy white fluids. Took about a min or so for his bits to reduce and go back into the sheath - meanwhile my bitch pranced around the garden happy with herself.

We tried again a few hours later and exact same thing.

Is this a slip/s mating ? Would he have delivered the goods

That certainly sounds like slip matings. As long as he penetrated and did the dance he'll have delivered the goods, especially if he was about to try to turn.

Most dogs can't produce enough semen to be fertile a few hours after breeding. It is best to allow at least 24hrs between breedings if you want to be sure he is fertile for it. Producing ejaculatory fluid and mating isn't the same as producing semen and actually being fertile.

Next time you try, you should attempt to help him stay there is he is able to calm down on top her a bit and then you should be controlling closely the way that he turns and dismounts whilst someone else holds the bitch by the collar and prevents her from pulling away.

Often this is a bitch issue - in that the bitch's vaginal muscles haven't constricted to hold him in place during the tie. It might be that he's not getting quite deep enough during the thrusting part of things...

The stud dogs owner should be able to stop this happening, once I'm sure my boy is in I hold him there until I'm sure they're tied. The flattening of the back is normally seen after the tie, that's him coming out.

With the one of our's who for some reason, never achieved a tie (Bassets are not the easiest to mate ) once he had penetrated, he was held in and then allowed to slip out at which point we 'upended' the bitch to help the sperm get where it needed to get.  He didn't have that many bitches, but he only missed to one.   She was brought back the next season and opted to use our other male who tied.   She missed again.    She was taken to a completely other dog on her next season, but with the same result.   Clearly not meant to be a mum.   In other words although most breeders prefer to see the tie, a slip mating can still be productive, provided there is penetration.
