I have had a successful mating resulting in a 15/20 minute tie with my 3 year old maiden [bitch] with a 3 year old proven stud on day 10. However on 2nd meeting on day 12 although she was still showing very keen, he was disinterested. She was flagging for him and although he had a sniff about he wasn't interested in pursuing the matter. What are peoples thoughts of pursuing further meeting over next few days.

Some males may mate a bitch just because she allows but realise she is not quite ready, and then not want to mate her until the right time.

As semen should be in good condition for at least 4 days I would go back on day 14.

If he shows no interest it could be she was a very early ovulator.

If both are keen and you get a mating, I'd return again 2 days later ( if travel is not a big issue).

If your able to get same day result progesterone testing you could check whete she is.

I'd keep trying if you can and have both of them near each other geographically.

But it is possible she has already gone over... However you did get one mating and the good news is that it only takes one mating at the right time and they are usually most fertile just before going over...

If you had a good mating, I'd not bother to go back.   Some experienced males seem to know they have done their job - maybe the bitch smells slightly different.   The second mating is really only a back up, in case the first mating didn't 'work'.    At least with one mating only, you should know her due date!!

Just like Barbara, I have seen this several times. The dog will mate early because the bitch will allow him, then he loses interest because she wasn't actually ready and a few days later he will mate again. When I've had this happen the scan has later shown that the bitch took on the later date.

Chances are your breed like mine, the males don't get bitches very often, so some will take initial advantage
