Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Too late to mate?

Hi all. I progesterone tested on Thursday morning (day 9) and was told the result was 3.18 ng/ml and to test again yesterday (Sunday, day 12). I got my vet to do the test in-house (same method as IDEXX) as obviously there’s no post on Sunday, and it came back 17.5 ng/ml!! This seems like a very quick increase. I was able to get her to the stud late afternoon, but I’m really worried it will have been too late. Her bleeding has only just started to slow today. Does this result suggest her eggs will be on their way out? Given I couldn’t get there until much later on in the day, it would have  been even higher, and of course, the sperm takes a while to reach the eggs.
My stud owner says to ignore the test result and mate again tomorrow (Tuesday). It’s a long drive so I’m not sure it’s worth it.

I would definitely do as the stud owner recommends and go back for a second mating. I'd have stayed overnight nearby if poss.

10.6ng - 20.2ng = Ova mature. Optimum fertility. Estimated breeding window 0 - 2 days.

So your spot on for mating Sunfay to Tuesday.

Good luck.

Go back for a second mating, even if she has gone over.   Chances are she's already pregnant with all the puppies she's likely to have, from the first mating, provided the male is producing viable sperm but most stud dog owners provide 2 matings for the stud fee.   So you might as well go back.

Sometimes I wonder how we ever managed to have our litters in the past, before all this testing!

We did what I prefer to do.

Bitches were boarded with the dog from just before they were likely to be ready, and stayed until they went over.

The pair got a chance to settle with each other, before they got down to business.

Males learnt to gauge when bitches were receptive. Bitches had time to warm to the idea.

By allowing several matings until the pair list interest ensured correct timing.
