I am looking for my first Border Terrier and am shocked at the cost. I have seen seen puppies bred from the family pet, no paperwork, going for upwards of £2k per puppy. I have no point of reference so want to know is this reasonable or are these people trying to cash in? What would the cost from a reputable breeder be? I am only interested in well bred, well raised and cared for puppies.
Thank you
Emma

It wont answer your question for this year but if you scroll down the page in this link
https://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeds/border-terrier, it will give an idea of last years litters, that were advertised on champdogs, with a price(not all put a price of course).
Thanks but unfortunately the link doesn’t work.
https://www.champdogs.co.uk/breeds/border-terrier try it again .if not go to the breeders section amd select border terrier. Average prices are at the bottom of the page.
Unfortunately prices are ridulous atm as most good breeders havnt been breeding and the gaps have been made up in the main by unscrupulous people taking advantage.
If u contact breeders direct and see what their plans are u may be able to get on a waiting list but its likely to be a long wait but worth it for a healthy puppy at not silly prices

Again, I'm afraid now is probably NOT the time to be buying a puppy. Good reputable breeders have curtailed their breeding plans, well into next year because of the situation with the Virus, leaving the field open to Greeders who are asking STUPID prices for what they are producing. There are puppies around but goodness knows what you might be buying in terms of health and temperament. These people aren't interested in producing the well bred, etc. puppy you are hoping for - just the income.
I was looking at Beagle puppies (rescues actually) only yesterday and was shocked at the prices being asked.

I am sure prices have shot up again recently. I have seen some litters of Cockers, Cavaliers, Mini Schnauzers and various Poodle crosses over £3000.
I'd love to know who can afford these prices - none of my friends or myself can pay these crazy prices. Or rather we won't! I hope HMRC are working overtime to catch these "breeders" and make them pay tax.

We could afford the price, but as sure as eggs are eggs I’m not going to pay it.

Greeders - thats made me laugh , thats exactly what they are

Seen Border Collies(from a commercial licensed breeder on this site) for sale as 3 day old puppies for £4,000.
Interestingly I could buy a young fully trained sheepdog of proven ability(& with better bloodlines & health tests) for less!!!

Ann R Smith: These Breeders are everywhere - as previously posted the CD site function is to promoted responsible dog breeding not police responsible dog breeding.
We can't decide how a site operates it's policies. From what you've written the breeder in question must have had the Puppies responsibly Health Tested or they wouldn't be advertised on here. Surely Breeders have the right to sell their Puppies at the price they decide (not saying it's how they should operate just that it is personal choice) and no amount of disapproval from the Forum will change that.
Yes you could buy a fully trained sheepdog of proven ability (& better bloodlines & health tests) for less!!!
From my Husband if he had continued his breeding programme!

Price .may be the breeders perogative but comment and discussion on a forum is perfectly acceptable and could.be considered part of what a forum does .discuss comment and educate where appropriate

furriefriends: I absolutely agree but my point is...will it have any impact on the Breeders involved or indeed the Prospective Buyers decision to spend that rediculous amount of money...I doubt it when the proof is you see Puppy adverts advising 'all sold' or 'all reserved'. It's horrible but people will make their own moral or immoral choices. Fair comment re forum debate/advice etc - just a sign of the times.

Depends on how a discussion goes .sometimes it makes people think .

Furriefriends: Pricing of Puppies: I know you're right. I just despair that discussions go round & round in circles, looking for someone to say the wrong thing in some posters eyes and then there is no valid discussion/advice - just a huge amount of quotes from areas that have nothing to do with the topic and of no worth to the person who raises the original question or takes on the relevant advice given

Mark R: They aren't as we don't currently have any border collie litters listed: Well here is an eye opener....nothing more to add. Thank you Mark for this nugget of information...

They were all sold by the time they were 10 days old !! & advert removed. The parents were hip scored & clinically eye tested only & carry lines to know epilepsy producing dogs

Interestingly the price was reduced for last 3 pups at 7 days of age & again at 9 days. The Breeder I know has 2 more litters in the pipeline so obviously wanted rid before they were on the ground

Ann R Smith: Puppy Pricing: This just proves the point I posted earlier about Greeders & Propsective New Owners taking no notice of advice given.
Not sure I would assume that reductions in price were made to 'clear out/get rid' before others were on the ground.
If this Breeder is on the CD site you will be able to check how many Litters they have every year YES/NO?
If they are classed as commercial breeders legally they would have to have just 3 Litters per year. If they are the kind of commercial breeder that is frowned upon (having checked the criteria from 5/6 or 7 Animal Welfare sites), they would have to be producing multiples well over 3 per year. Perhaps you could confirm this by further investigation if you know who this Breeder is and inform the Forum of your findings? (without naming as that could be seen as liablous) in order future buyers could avoid them>

Ann please for the avoidance of any doubt confirm that you are not talking about a litter that you have seen on Champdogs and are in fact talking about a litter you have seen advertised elsewhere.
The last border collie litter added to Champdogs was this one on May 15th
https://www.champdogs.co.uk/litter/54246

Just checked the breeder has removed their CD entry & added a different kennel name!! Highly suspicious this has happened since there was a discussion on commercial breeders being on CD on the forum. Hm must be my suspious nature.
I am always astounded by breeders do health testing yet ignore their dogs links to known epilepsy producing lines & buyers wonder why their puppy has seizures, not just BCs BTW I was researching possible/probable genetic links to epilepsy before I retired

Ann
"Are you in fact talking about a litter you have seen advertised elsewhere ?"
It is a straight question and just needs a yes or no answer.

I cannot check because all the entry for the breeder has gone & I didn't think to take screen captures. If I find another similar entry I will screen capture the evidence & cross reference with the epilepsy information/ breeders licence number etc(plus health testing information)

> I cannot check because all the entry for the breeder has gone
It is a good job I can then and as I said earlier the last Border Collie litter was added on May 15th.
Furthermore you are now saying this breeder no longer has a Champdogs account.
That makes me question if this so called breeder has ever been a member. What did you say their name was ?

Ann R Smith: Breeder has removed their CD entry and added a different kennel name: Yes highly suspicious.
Wouldn't think it was just suspicious nature. Knowing your expertise at going the extra mile to bring seamingly unscrupulous breeders to the Members attention then the different kennel name will be known to you.
I wonder if this particular commercial breeder would have investigated any links to an epilepsy line?
Admirable that research into this particular genetic illness has and continues to go on. Most continue to learn of new research but it's an ongoing learning curve for breeders who don't have awareness of the scientists knowledge - a bit like the current pandemic - I am astounded too...
Sorry off thread! If you do find out any further detail of this Collie Breeder, then I am sure you will share it with us.

They are now using another kennel name very similar to their old one & no I am not naming names on here.
As a matter of interest they were asking £1,000 a pup before lockdown, on the basis of one of their dogs winning a non Championship Obedience class at Crufts several years ago.
