Topic Dog Boards / General / Interesting price drop for a litter of puppies
- By Ann R Smith Date 01.09.20 10:20 UTC
Wandering around the selling sites for no particular reason I csme across a litter that has been up for sale since birth !!

Offered for sale originally for £4,000(their puppies are usually £1,000) then a slight price drop to £3,900 after a few days & now at 3 weeks & a few days they are down to £2,900 ! They were advertised as KC registered at 3 days old too. Same breeder has a litter of cross breeds up for sale as well

Interesting claims by the licensed breeder, that dogs they have bred have won at Crufts in Obedience-no not the Obedience Championships, a YKC class of er 1 several years ago.

I wonder if the silly prices bubble is deflating or just a licensed breeder getting rid of puppies at a lower price to make way for the next litter.

They are from health tested parents apparently BTW

We’ll definitely see more of this I think. Demand is decreasing where people are back to work and people shopping for puppies already have one, and supply has increased due to people seeing the opportunity for a quick buck. Going to be a funny few months I think, rescue included.

On the same site several 5/6 month old puppies being sold on for around £400/£500. If they had been bred by responsible breeders they should go back, but they were probably around £1,000 each at the time obviously their current owners want to recoup their losses. For most "need more time" is the reason given:roll:

Yes I've seen a lot of this as I get e-mail alerts for new adverts for the couple of breeds I'm keeping an eye on, and also alerts when prices have dropped. It's a good sign. Although yesterday I saw an advert for Golden Ret x Poodle and the pups are listed as £5000 as they are so rare -all but one are black. So a black crossbreed with impossible coat, a bargain at 5k eh!

Lovely, just what I've always wanted. Will go nicely with my GR:grin:

When I was looking the other day what was going there were quite a few litters at or below £1000 now. So I'd say perhaps now that people are starting to get back to their normal routines, and the impulse board buying is dropping, so the price is starting to follow too.

Ann R Smith.  This is something I have also been outraged about and gave an interview to our local press regarding my concerns when the Pandemic became less retricted on movement.. Like you, I trawl the selling sites and I have alerts of new adverts and price reductions weekly.  I am delighted to see these greedy & unrealistic Breeders get there 'come upance' when they can't sell.  Reducing prices gives a terrible impression.

I would agree and it's the Pups that will suffer the rehoming issues, not the owners and so the whole treadmill starts again...

Goodness I have noted a huge amount of inflated prices but this must take the biscuit so to speak.Think this Puppy might be for sale for a long, long time and sadly as the Puppy grows, the less likleyhood there will be of finding a suitable forever home.

Ann R Smith.  Couldn't agree more that a responsible breeder would make it compulsary to return the Puppy to them as part of their Sales Contract/Puppy Pack as I do.  It's a vicious circle.  If you don't vet your new owner then the likley hood of return increases with only increased anxiety to the dog in question.  Thnkfully as at today's date, I have never had a Puppy returned due to doing my 'recky. initially

Tectona  I can guarantee the numbers involved will increase as will the sad stories of rescue centres being unable to cope due to their charity funding also drying up during this time.

I have noticed the price of litters starting to fall and not all pups selling. We're looking for a cocker spaniel (although waiting for things to settle) and there are still litters for high prices, but there have been quite a few at lower prices in the last week or 2.
The sad thing is the number of pups around 4 months old coming up for sale as the owners have realised they can't look after them/won't fit with working etc. I even saw a 9 week old up for resale the other day, I'm not sure why they didn't go back to the breeder.

I have occasionally taken people advising a young puppy to task, asking why they haven't gone back to the breeder - most good breeders have a return clause on their Sale Contract but then again, people are sometimes reluctant to have made a mistake!!  Unless looking for a refund.   A good sale price may produce more!?

Most good breeders do, but remember that the majority of breeders aren't good ones.  They're breeding to sell, no other reason, so they won't want to be taking puppies back and giving refunds.

Occasionally it is the case of course and I did message someone last week to suggest it, who was selling their dachshund pup, and mentioned in the ad that pup was from a reputable breeder.  They did make contact and return her in the end.

I have always wondered what KC registered breeders think of the current extortionate prices being asked for puppies. Pure bred or otherwise.

I always assumed it was just scam selling sites I was looking at since a "Sharstaffiepei" was being sold for £5k. This is a litter from a Shar Pei sire and a Staffie x Shar Pei dam. A £5k mongrel.

10 years ago I got my KC registered Siberian Husky for £600 and since we had to put her to sleep this year, I have been looking for another but the prices I have seen are into the high thousands. There is no way in hell these over priced puppies will be anywhere close to the perfect dog my girl was and there is no way any dog will be loved more or less depending on the price a person will pay.

I understand to a certain extent buying a working dog from a reputable working dog breeder since you are paying for more than just the way the dog looks and more than a family pet
but surely this over inflated asking price for puppies is unacceptable by all reputable dog breeders.

Additionally maybe I am looking in the wrong places. When posters here say they have allerts set in selling sites, what sites are you all using? I dont want ripped off and I dont want to be supporting bad breeders who over breed for the cash.

Breed clubs puppy lists are a good place, as they have to have a code of ethics of some sort

There is no such thing as a KC registered breeder, the KC only register dogs BTW

Ann R Smith:  There is no such thing as a KC registered breeder.

The Kennel Club have an Assured Breeder Scheme which also has a strict code of ethics.  That is what I perceive as a KC registered breeder. (list available on KC site)
