Hi there

I was just wandering, I know that all dogs differ on days they are pregnant for some are over the date expected some pups come before the date expected etc. But what is the danger zone for premature/overdue pups. What I mean by this is when is it a dangerous time for the bitch to start her whelping 1 week before her due date etc etc

I know I have not explained this very well, but you get the drift of what I mean ;)

Hi
I`ve had a litter 5 days early with no problems.Have everthing ready and in place a week before so that when labour does begin you can stay with your bitch to reassure her and everything you need is at hand
and you are not running around like a headless chicken trying to find something that you were sure you knew where to find it,when you should be with your bitch, ready to help if need be.Dosen`t sound quite right but I`m sure you`ll get the jist.Everyone
whose `been there done that `will know what I mean.
You sound anxious don`t be for your bitches sake, stay calm.
Best Wishes

I am abit worried yes. Even though I am not having a litter for sometime yet. I have read the book of the bitch twice know and have learnt alot from that. But sometimes a question just pops into my head and I think Oh God I dont know the answer to that, and thats when I start bombarding you lot with questions :)

I am just trying to get as much detail as poss at the mo Thanks for the advice

Hi There,

My girl had her pups 6 days too early (4 weeks ago), the vet and I were very concerned about this and I was warned that I may loose all the pups. As it turn out, she had 5 lovely healthy pups and I have had no problems at all with the litter - they are currently being weaned and are eating very well, for a week early, they were a nice size average of 140grams (sorry don't know oz) at birth. It was a very worrying time.

To get how many ounces you just divide 28 into the number of grams and thats how many ounces. 450 grams = 16 ounces = 1 pound
140 grams = 4.9 ounces so basically 5 ounces.
Thats what I do, my scale is only in grams and they only fit into it up to about 2 weeks. :)

Our experience has been this: Loki (Australian Shepherd) had a tied mating on 7th September; this according to my charts, would have meant she was due on 9th November, according to my breed program meant she was due on 8th November.

We moved her into our porch ("the maternity suite") and slept with her from 2nd November. Her temperature remained at 38.5 until the evening of 4th November.

In the early hours of 5th November, she produced 7 healthy pups, 5 bitches, 2 dogs, with weights between 12.5 oz and 16 ozs. I believe, from the only placenta she did not eat, that another puppy had failed to develop beyond say 15-16 days gestation. All puppies are healthy (YEAH!!!) and all have almost doubled their birth weight.

I think we have been extremely lucky - we took expert advice and followed it - and so far, so good. My advice is - prepare for the worst - and hope for the best!
