I'm interested in this breed. I have been told they are a hound. Are there any breeders or owners of this breed that I can ask for advice as a pet owner.

Have u looked at the podengo rescues . I know of people who have rescued them and all say once settled they make lovely family pets.
I think Ann Smith here may have one or knows more about them at the least

Thank you furriefriends I have read this on this breed but I want to know more about them. Our last two dogs came from a rescue but this time I want a puppy.

We are not looking to buy a puppy just yet. We are looking for a pet that will fit in with our life. We are both retired and enjoy walking. We lost our last dog a year ago he was 15 years old and now we are ready to welcome a new member to our family. We don't breed or show dogs but we both like this breed and I would like to find out more about them.

There were 18 entered at the Houndshow 2019.
There is a breed club, Portuguese Podengo club of GB. I'm sure someone on there would help you.

I have friends who have rescue Podengo from Spain & Portugal. They have one of each size. Small, medium & large, their's are smooth coats & there are also wire haired types. So it is a matter of whether you want a puppy & if so what size & coat type or if you are willing to adopt a rescue, it's a case of what dogs are available. The Peqeno are the smallest size,l around 12 inches tall.

All three sizes require a 100% secure garden & need to be exercised in safe areas as they all of have quite high drive & a tendency to think for themselves. My friend is a clicker based trainer & does agility with theirs, who enjoy it immensely & they also do some obedience training for control.  They are a good dog to train as they are quick to learn.

They can be quite noisy, but they have really good temperaments & are highly affectionate.Training & socialising are a must.

Sadly they are treated with disrepect in Portugal & Spain & are frequently abandoned at the end of their hunting season to be replaced by a new dog(s) there are many in rescue in Portugal & Spain.

Not a breed I would personally choose, not for any reason, just that I prefer herding breeds & my two younger rescue mongrels really enjoy mixing with them.

Although they are officially classed as hounds the two smaller sizes are like crosses between a terrier & hound as they tend to hunt & kill rabbits including going underground !!

My niece and her husband live in a remote area in Catalonia and often walk from their home into the mountains. One day they came across a Podengo puppy (or perhaps a Podengo cross) just wondering about on it’s own. Nobody for miles and nobody claimed the puppy, so they kept him. He was hard work at first and had to be confined to a well fenced area on their smallholding And yes, does bark a lot. Now he’s older he is much more settled and enjoys being part of their family of cats, chickens and another dog.

I was watching crufts on youtube that's how I came to see the breed. I watched three videos one was doing agility, one was in the show ring and the 3rd one was a lady talking about them. I liked what I saw and I decided to find out about the breed. I like the small smooth haired. I'm not the sort of person to rush into buying a breed I haven't had before. I want to know the pro's and con's of owning one and then we will decide if this is the breed for us.

I think the first lady to import the breed & breed a huge amount is Betty Judge of the Plushcourt affix. I do remember that one year at crufts, actually it was 2010, she had 30 entered & the other 42 entered were either her affix or the parents were

omg just looked at 2009, Mrs Judge had 40 entered(cant remember the cost per entry but would have totalled at least £1000) & a further 4 were in partnership, with the remaining 38 mostly carrying the Plushcourt affix.

It was Betty Judge who was talking about this breed I watched on youtube. If anyone hasn't seen it it's called Dog Breed Video:

I don't know anyone with the tiny ones, but I have several friends with the medium and large varieties, nice enough if you can put up with a dog that can never be off lead, or only in ultra safe dog fields. One comes to our racing club, she's really focused on the lure so the owner takes the chance and lets her off lead, I try to stop the lure right beside me then rugby tackle her before she takes off. Once I didn't get her in time and we had to abandon the afternoons racing to go looking for her. The owner has a gps tracker on her now, as does another friend with a pod that went missing for a few days after jumping out her garden. There are certainly easier breeds out there

Thank you for telling me chaumsong. This is the sort of information I need to know.

Indeed.   I think I'm right in saying she had PBGVs at one point.   She also has/had? Pigmy Goats.   I tend to look on these dogs as Terriers more than Hounds

This gives a good enough history of the breed, and specific info. too.

You could always contact a main breeder (go visit by appointment if possible at the moment) or the Breed Club.

NB   Check out the average breed prices at the foot of the front page for the breed - and bear this in mind!!!
