Topic Dog Boards / Health / worried about my DDB puppy weight
- By Tom96 [gb] Date 25.06.20 21:49 UTC
hello every one! i just got my 8 weeks DDB puppy, and he is only weight 4.7 kg, also he looks a bit younger from an normal 8 weeks puppy, he is kc register and i was in weekly contact we the breeder who sent me pictured of him both alone and both with his brothers and sisters, which  looks at the same size. but its my second DDB and i remember the last one was bigger and heavier at 8 weeks, did anyone here had the same worries?

It does seem a little under. Have you taken him to the vets for a check up?
Im taking it the breeder was worming them? What food did the breeder have the litter on? How many times a day were they fed? Should all be in the puppy pack you were given about feeding times and rough amounts. Also worming regime too.

The vet said he is fine, but he’s missing some back muscles that will develop when he will play more outside, he is wormed and flea and ate royal canine puppy food three times a day, I think maybe he’s not 8 weeks old as been told

I’d be feeding him 4 meals of Royal Canin per day.  It wouldn’t do any harm to add some goats milk too.  He does sound underweight for an 8 week old puppy.

Labradors are my breed, and my pups are normally at least 7kgs in weight by 8 weeks of age.  So definitely sounds under weight, maybe get some replacement puppy milk and mix it up making a warm porridge with his kibble to give him a boost.

I would be feeding 4 meals a day at this age until 12 weeks roughly. I would probably consider upping the amounts as well.
Does his KC cert not say his dob?

Well from personal experience, I'd not be feeding him ANY Royal Canin!!   With my boy, bought at 4 months, he'd been on RC Junior and for me, that's far too high in protein for his breed.  It may be fine for small breeds, but for big puppies - no.   It encourages too much growth, too fast resulting in bone problems, as was the case with my boy.   Even as I got him off and onto something with a more sensible protein level as soon as I saw what the percentage was, with RC Junior.

If he's underweight, and he could just be the runt of the litter?, then yes, give a late evening fourth meal too.   And we always gave our puppies a mid morning, mid afternoon and late evening (they didn't need a full late evening meal although we did leave dry food in the box overnight) drink of warmed goats milk.

He certainly seems lightweight for his age (I'd expect a male dalmatian pup to be about 7kg at 8 weeks, and then gain about a kilo every week). And DDB are a much bigger breed than dalmatians! I'd also be feeding him 4 times a day till 3 months of age.

What's the date of birth on his KC registration document?

We have always reared our Golden Retriever puppies on Royal Canin and have always been happy with their bone and condition.

I'm not a fan of RC at all, I don't like the high maize content, and when I emailed asking about the antioxidant they used they confirmed it was BHT, which they did.  BHT is a known carcinogen, not something I'd want to be feeding my dogs.

I'm not going to fight about this (whether to feed RC or not) but for ME and my breed, I'd not touch it.   I don't want maize either fwiw.

He sounds underwieght for sure.  My 7 weeks 5 days old boxers were between 6.6 and 7 kgs. Not a fan of complete of any kind for puppies but that's my choice.
