Hi Lynn,
Here's the official "term" (found after sorting through some heavy medical explanations---too much to link medical blah blah blah jargon sort through
"
Renal agenesis, also called kidney aplasia, occasionally occurs and the individual is born with one or both kidneys not present. Dogs, cats and humans can survive quite well if one normal kidney is present and functioning.
From another
Doberman Genetic Diseases "Renal Aplasia (Renal Agenesis): absence of one or both kidneys or kidney tissue, leading to death if both kidneys are absent or affected. Mode of inheritance is undetermined. Age at onset is less than 1 year."
It's not on the list for
Diseases of Purebred dogs- Weims so it just might have shown up randomly in your dog because of a particular gene defect. I've found other lists of similar makeup --nothing on weims.
I'm sure that you've ruled him out for potential stud duty as a matter of course, right? It's too bad that he was born with this, but it sounds as if it won't affect him as long as his one kidney remains healthy (very likely). At least you now have the 'official term' so you can do more research on it if you're so inclined. :)
hth,
toodles
