Topic Dog Boards / General / How many generations for import?
- By Kibiko [gb] Date 17.06.20 22:50 UTC
Hi everyone.
I am interested in becoming a breeder of a breed that has an open studbook in their country of origin... but this raises a big question for me.

I currently only have boys but I'm looking to get my first girl later this year/next year. I am mentally making plans for which kennels and dogs I like, which have health issues, and which lines I want to invest in and follow etc. But as we have the open studbook in the country of origin I am curious if dogs with less than a certain quantity of generations will be able to be registered in the UK? Additionally if this also applies to using a stud with few generations in their pedigree, would there be any problems with the litter registration?

I know this is a problem with AKC, they require 3 generation pedigree, but I haven't seen anything of the sort on the KC website. I'm currently assuming that there is no rules for no. generations but I dont want to assume wrong.

Thank you in advance for your help.

It'd be worth giving the KC a ring but as far as I know any import of a KC recognised breed will require an export pedigree from the country of origin to be registered over here. If it's not a KC recognised breed it won't be registered anyway.

As I remember (and it's a long time ago now and my memory ain't what it used to be ) when we came back to the UK with our lot, they had to have export pedigrees (plus the paperwork to prove they'd been through quarantine - this was before PP) from the Canadian KC to be able to be registered in the UK.  One was a re-import as he'd come from the UK to Canada, and back.  Recognised breed.

Thank you for responding. Should be OK then, but maybe I'll try sending an email... its a bit of a small question to bother with a phone call and I dont need an answer straight away.

It's Ibizan Hounds by the way.

Just curious if anyone else has experience with open stud books?

Because the staff are working from home people are reporting that phone calls are the way to go at the moment; emails are more likely to be ignored.
