Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Puppy advice COI percentage

Hi there,

This has possibly been asked before but I just want confirmation around my situation from people with more knowledge.

I have put interest down on a Corgi puppy (Pembroke). Looking at the lineage I can see that the Sire & Dam share the same grandparents on one side (Sires's mother is the Dams father's brother). Both have a low COI Sire's 3% and the Dam's is <2%, however, the puppy's calculation on KC is coming out at 9.6% (breed average is 9%). Running the numbers myself going back 4 generations I'm getting a COI of 6.25% for the puppy. Just wondering why there is a 3% difference and if the highish COI is something to be concerned about?

So advice would be much appreciated before I make a final decision.

Thanks

COI on KC site is unreliable as they use all the data they have - so e.g. a dog with a 10 generation COI will look high compared to a dog with recent imports in the pedigree which only uses 5 generations for the calculation. Comparing apples and oranges.

You need to use more than 4 generations, it needs to be at least 7 & preferably 10, I believe.
The puppy will have a different COI than its parents, as you have included a further generation.
As mentioned before the KC COI will differ than some other ways, as they don't included foreign dogs, in the calculation. To use a COI it needs to be the same amount of generations & include all ancestors, otherwise it is not a reliable tool in my opinion.

That makes sense as you are combining the same grandparents in this generation, but I wouldn't get hung up on numbers, and I wouldn't call 9.6% high at all.

Speak to the breeder, ask about the line breeding, what do they want to solidify and are there any potential problems being doubled up on. It's a perfectly reasonable breeding, not too close, providing the breeder knows the dogs they're doubling up on well, or knows someone who does.

As has already been said the difference between your calculation and the KC's is purely about the number of generations used. In my pedigree programme I set it to use every available generation, which gives a more accurate, albeit higher, number.

To give you a benchmark, 30 years ago most show dogs had COIs in the 20s or 30s, increased awareness, cheap programs that work it out and the pet passport and cheaper, easier imports have brought COIs down significantly in most breeds.

Thanks for all getting back, it's all really useful information. We managed to get the generations back to 6 but not fully back to 7 unfortunately. The Dams lineage is pretty clean and has a couple on imports throughout it and the sires had a bit more line breeding but I wouldn't saying it was overly prominent.

Thanks again
