Hi All

Iam new and i hope you are all well and safe during this current climate.
I wanted to see if any of you can help me. We are in essex in the countryside and looking to give a forever home to either a cocker spaniel or beagle or similar. We have a 11yr old cocker but unfortunately she has gone blind and we lost our other boy last year and been looking. I am so worried about all other sites as either looks worrying or from abroad.

If you have any one that can help me, we have been in contact with the previous breeder for maybe retired breeding doggie or returned previous pups. Looking for a younger doggie.

Thanks in advance for  your help and advice.

I have recently been discussing with my husband whether generally speaking, it is fair on an old dog to introduce a new dog to the household and we pretty much agree it feels a bit unfair to burden an old dog with the challenges that a new dog can bring.
I feel personal guilt at having taken on a puppy in what turned out to be the last couple of years of my old dog’s life.
As your 11 year old is now blind I personally would consider it to be a bad idea to introduce another dog. I would wait until the inevitable happens.

Have u considered contacting rescue ? Especially as u are considering an older dog
Unfortunately now is not the best time to be looking for a new dog from breeders  as unfortunately there has been an enormous hike in prices as well as many unscrupulous breeders
Contacting the nreed clubs maybe useful or u could.speak to those in the breeder section as well
However I do agree with garbos view and perhaps waiting a while may be better

Thank you for your reply, we was advise a good idea as she followed my other dog by vets. We have also been in discussion too and we have have been 50/50. But i also aware there few doggies out there that have owner not being able to look after them due to current climate and that breaks my heart too. But thanks for taking the time to reply. X

I think getting another dog whilst you have an old dog depends on the dog involved. I had a ten and a half year old GSD when I got the first of my Belgians. The GSD loved puppies and had been the puppy socialiser at the dog club.  When we got the puppy it was as though all her birthdays had come at once and it seemed to give her a new lease of life. So it depends on the character of your existing dog although her being blind could be a problem.

For what it's worth, I'm having the exact same thoughts after losing my Basset.   My Whippet is 11.5 now and although she seems ok, was looking for him for a while.   She was eating up ok, but not so much now which may be to do with him not here, or something else.  Her wanting breakfast especially is spasmodic at best.   I have been hoping to find an older male dog to keep her company (especially so she doesn't have to be at home alone which she never has, apart from a few weeks after we lost our previous Basset and before Frankie joined us).  BUT there is, for me, also the thought that is bringing another dog in here now, going to be right, for her.   Apart from the fact that so far, the only two 'possibilities' haven't seemed suitable Shelters aren't yet open although some will allow reservations online and deliver.

Whether another dog will work in your case, would depend on the new dog, and how your existing dog would react.  I understand where you are coming from.

I got a 8 week old German shepherd puppy! Had a 10 year old shep Heidi, who was very good at training puppies, William a giant 12 year old, who has cataracts.  Sadly I lost Heidi 3 weeks after getting puppy! Now the dynamics have changed in the house, poor William( who just wants to be left alone)  is continually being jumped on by puppy! Training the pup to leave him alone is on going!
Obviously if I knew when I got the pup, what I know now, I would not of got him! Don't get a pup with a old dog!

Don't get a pup with a old dog!

Bit of a sweeping statement, I've always had"old"dogs when a new puppy has entered the household. Some of my "old" dogs have loved pups & some have initially hated them.

It's down to me to work with the situation & educate my puppies to respect the personal space of any dog that doesn't appreciate ypung puppies. It isn't totally down to the resident dogs to educate incomers

Hi everyone, I've been trying to rehome a miniature bull terrier but apparently there are not many around. I've tried various breeders but no-one seems to be able to help. I'd much rather give an unwanted dog a home rather than buy a puppy.
Is there anyone out there who can steer me in the right direction? I'd be eternally grateful x

You are looking at a breed where the numbers are very low so finding one that is needing to be rehomed is going to be hard. U could try the breed club or if they have one breed rescue .
