Does anyone on here have any comments on Epilepsy in BC. She is a ISDS registered bitch 5 years old.
She suddenly took a fit then several more in the vets. She has come home on meds, but the question is will she ever be fit to work again. She is not a pet but a working dog. She belongs to the shepherd who comes onto my land to see to the sheep

I think they will just have to wait and see how she stabilises. A lot of fitting dogs still work. It’ll depend on her triggers too.

There is a lot of work going on in this breed, try to encourage the owner to engage with this database:

The sheepdog is looking much better but her brain is not working. Looking well and cheerful but has no idea what sheep are, nor the whistles. She is running about and sniffing a lot, we wondered if she cannot hear properly.

She's a bit old to have inherited epilepsy. It will take a while for any meds to kick in

There's study ongoing with the ISDS & the RVC into the condition

She hadn't been given Bravecto has she ?

Sadly it will be difficult to know, there are known lines were epilepsy occurs more frequently than others, if she will ever return to some form of normality. It is difficult to know whether meds will control the condition & how long it will take for them to kick in. She certainly should not be required to work until the meds get control of the seizures.

Did she have cluster seizures or multiple separate seizures ? Did the vet do any blood tests on her for possible chemical causes ?

Epilepsy has many causes & IGE(Idiopathic Generalised Epilepsy) is just one sub form

If more than one from a litter develops the condition it is definitely contacting the RVC via the ISDS/RVC research as well as putting the pedigree information on to the database

I would normally suggest submitting DNA to the research by the AHT but that of course is somewhat up in the air pending the AHT financial problems

She will be like a Zombie to start with until she gets used to the meds, broke my heart when one of mine started getting meds and was considering stopping them. Took about a month for him to get used to them and start to function fully.
