Callum my 4 year gsd had a funny turn yesterday after somebody had knocked on the door, as usual all the dogs started to bark, then Callum lost his balance and his back legs went from under him, he stumbled into the kitchen like he had drunk a bottle of whiskey, by this time i already had hold of him, he was very out of it, glazey expression and swaying, it didnt last long and then he was fine again, i dont know if this was just a funny turn or possibly a partiall seizure i have him booked into the vets to get him checked out to see if anything is not right, what a scare hes my big baby, just hope the vet dosent find anything wrong with him.

Hi Diane,
Unfortunately, what Callum experienced does sound like a type of seizure :(

The first one that Chienne (16 months old) had was right after she jumped off of the sofa..stood there for a moment before staggering around rather drunkenly. It only lasted a minute and we thought she had injured her leg from the jump. Then she was fine and happy...as if nothing had ever gone wrong

2 months later, she had a longer 'moment' like this so we took her into the vet since we could actually believe that something had really happened. Dr ruled out anything physical with blood tests..so it was her brain jangling that was doing it. Eventually, we figured out that 'doggy stress' + overheating brought on her seizures.

We can usually head off these situations now and she averages 1 seizure about every 15 months. The last one was in June. 4 days after a long hot drive immediately followed by an overly persistant HUGE (but sweet) Bernese Mountain dog that wouldn't take her 'instructions' to leave her alone  :(

It's something that we're aware of, but hasn't affected her enough to put her on meds. She's 7 now. :)

I know other dogs that have seizures and live quite happily on their meds.
More than likely, after the dr. runs the required blood tests to rule out physical symptoms of internal problems, he'll adopt a wait and see attitude. The guidelines for giving meds is somewhere around 4-6 seizures in a month's time.

So don't worry and good luck at the vet :)

Oh dear Diane:( My initial thought on reading the title of the thread was *Lady* what a surprise to see it's Callum:( When have you managed to get him in the vets for? Please don't forget to come back and let us know what they think it was/is- fingers crossed it wasn't anything serious;) Has he been okay in himself since? Best of luck to you for your boy;)

P.S; How is Lady doing by the way?:)

Hi Stacey

I have got him booked into the vets on the 29th had to do it for then because the vet i want to see is very popular, as for Lady she is getting a little incontinant now, so when you see the old tail going you have to be very quick, if you get my meaning other than that she is fine, and i am still waiting for Buffy to come into season, she wants to get a move on i have her booked into LKA, still if we miss it never mind.

Hi Diane

I had a GSD who once did this at about 3 years old - he suddenly looked glazed and drunk and was weak legged. I rushed him to the vets and he was like it for about 1/2 an hour I think. Vet didn't know what it was and he never went like it again for the rest of his life.

Hope the lad stays well

Hi Sara

I hope so to, just hope the vet doesnt find anything wrong with him and this is going to be the first and last of any problems like this for the future.

Well like I say Diane- fingers crossed for him:) Glad to hear Lady's still plodding along;) As for Buffy- well I've just entered Kassie in the GSD League show on the 15th Dec but she hasn't had a season yet and I reckon with my luck and her being an arkward bitch- she'll come into season then- I bet you:rolleyes: Since she'll be 8 and a half months old then I suppose anything's possible:)

Sounds like the 'turn' Buddy had a while back which had me scared stiff!! ;) Vet gave it the wonderful name of 'idiopathic Vestibular Episode'! which apparently means a minor bleed in the balance part of the brain, Idiopathic meaning they don't have a clue what causes it!!! :) my vet said it was more common in older dogs but Bud was only 7 months at the time, he was right as rain within hours and hasn't had another one since. just one of those many things which dogs do which scares us witless and convinces us that they are gravely ill ;)
Hope callum is fine :D

No, all fine, as if nothing had happened, just got back from discover dogs so they now have a nice leopard print vet bed with the rubber on the back to roll all over, and have a guess who is laying right in the middle of it, BUFFY, didnt take much to work that one out spoilt brat.

HI, this happened to my labrador. She had been fast asleep on the sofa for a couple of hours - someone knocked at the door and she jumped off the sofa to run to the door but collapsed before she got there. She lay with a glazed look for about 2 minutes - seemed like hours, but I let her sit up when she wanted to and then stand, and she was completely fine, but we went off to the vet He said that her blood had pooled in her body as she had been so still for so long and then jumping up made her faint as there was not enough blood supply to the brain. He said it wasn't a true siezure or fit, to my great relief, and it happened about 3 times during her life - always when she was awoken suddenly after lying in the same postition for a long while.

Ok update on this story, I took Callum to the vets and she could find nothing wrong with him, so i just have to keep an eye on him and if anything else is to happen take him back to see them.
Lady on the other hand is driving me mad, over the weekend she was constantly weeing and pooing every time i went up stairs i came back down she had gone again, i have never washed so many vet beds in such a short space of time, after that she started straining but nothing was coming out, so i booked her into the vets and the outcome was that she was constipated and the vet had a lovely job of sorting that out!!:D so £54.00 later all seems to be ok now.
My vet charges nearly £22.00 for a consultation and as i found out last night, if you are in there for longer you get charged an additional £12.50 so all in all for 1 consultation it nearly came to £35.00 which i am afraid i think is a rip off, but as we know vets seem to charge what they like these days, and as caring animal lovers that we are we will pay it just to see our animals fit and healthy once again.

Glad your dog is OK now. I never heard of a vets charging extra for a consultation! That's disgusting and would put some people off visiting for fear of the charges rising if the vet didn't diagnose/treat the dog in the time allocated. Cheeky swines - I bet they don't deduct if your sitting in the waiting room for any length of time when the vet is running behind!
I'd find another practise.
