Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Which milk replacer for weaning?
- By Sambob26 [gb] Date 15.01.20 07:44 UTC
Hi which milk replacer do you use for starting the weaning process? I have used Welpi in 2 past litters but wondered if there was a cheaper and/or better brand? I don't mind the cost if its superior to one of the cheaper ones, just seeing others like Lactol at a much lower price. I don't want to go for cheaper if it is not as good. Thanks for any help or thoughts.

We used goats milk (warmed).   It's close to bitch milk in make up.   It's readily available in most supermarkets these days, but we had a local contact who had a Toggenburg and was happy to keep us supplied for as long as needed.

I also use goats milk.  You can get whole goats milk in Waitrose for sure.  I looked at other milk replacers but they have shocking ingredient lists.  I mean, I don't think dogs or puppies need vegetable oils, soy, dehydrolysed blah blah etc etc.  If I were feeding younger pups who were not on solid food, then I'd probably use a milk replacer like this for fear of getting vitamins or minerals wrong by just using goat milk, but if you're weaning and this is just to supplement and soften food, then goats milk is totally natural with no preservatives or processed crap in it...

Like everyone else use goats milk most major supermarkets sell it we even buy it and when the date isn't great freeze it and defrost as needed, my vet says it is the next best thing to mothers milk we even bottle feed with it if needed

When at one point, Toggie dried up, we sourced people with a load of goats so bought it in large quantities and froze it.   We used this btw, for weaning, not to supplement the puppies.  We always had Esbilac or Whelpie on hand, should it be needed.

Like the others i use goats milk too. Have tried the various others and this was the best option in terms of them taking to it plus also not getting awful bellies.
