Our lovely girl had 8 pups on Tuesday (days ago), all pups healthy and gaining weight, she’s a really good mum, feeding well, eating herself, slight mastitis at day 3 which we’ve identified and addressed and it seems to have settled, but she keeps nesting and scratching in corners around the house and is just slightly restless. Is this normal behaviour? Or any ideas ?

It could just be afterpains as the uterus contracts, but it's possibly the start of eclampsia. If she were mine I'd give her some Collo-cal D immediately. If you don't have any, call your vet straight away.

Calcium!  Not just in food form (which won't provide enough) but in supplement form.  You can use Tums (for humans) as well, in the short-term...

Did your vet confirm empty after you felt she had finished whelping.   Very often being restless like this could mean she has retained birthing material and should have been given a shot to clear her out.  Could be the uterus contracting of course but I'd have thought it too soon to go to eclampsia which normally hits when the puppies are at the height of their demands on her.

I know people here quickly go to a lack of calcium but I'd suggest that provided mum was on a top quality food, prior to mating and right through the pregnancy she should have been ok.

Talk to your vet re calcium treatment.

That's when it usually kicks in, but my first bitch (who I stupidly gave calcium supplements during pregnancy, as was advised at the time) came down with it badly when the litter was 3 days old.
