Topic Dog Boards / Health / High urea

I'm absolutely heart broken and crying as I write this.
Last night I took my 7 3/4 year old toy poodle to the vet after she'd eaten chocolate. Before making her vomit they took base line kidney bloods which showed her urea was high - ten point something.
It was such a shock as she's well, happy and enjoying life. No thirst or excessive weeing.
I got a wee sample this morning that looks is a bit cloudy, not clear.
I've hardly slept a wink. Constantly thinking of what's to come and living without her.
I'd be grateful for any advice on diagnosis, treatment and life expectancy.
All they could say last night was that she would probably go on a special diet. I'm worried about that as she's a picky eater and has home cooked food for one meal.

I understand how u feel atm it is certainly a shock and one I had with my nearly 12 year old cat just before christmas

Firstly is it possible.this result could be due to the amount of chocolate he had just.consummed ?   And will return to normal .Is.the vet asking u to bring him back for further investigation s ? I would hope so
In any event I would expect more tests to be done . I was lucky in that my vet is qualified in internal medicine if not I was going for a referral .
We have had bloods ,urine samples and blood pressure taken.  A uti was also discovered for which he has been treated for .not.uncommon in ckd. Also the disease has been staged at stage 3. Not.the worst but bad enough. In our case it is chronic

Bentley was raw fed but has decided he wont touch that now I have altered the food to take ckd into account . Now we are on a vet prescribed renal food ,cheaper btw from zooplus. Should u need to go that way
I think u need to.chat things through with your vet and confirm exactly what the condition is and what.the plans are. Seems we shall be in very close.contac with the vet to monitor.
It's worth asking what u should be looking out for as well.
Bentleys only symptom was excess.drinking which I assume was not.thecase for u .
The earlier u find out  the better the prognosis so the chocolate if not.the.temporary cause may actually of been lucky .  I feel more in top of things now but its means I find myself watching his every move . None of which has actually changed just my worries

Normal range for urea is 2.5-9.6 so 10 is only just into the high range and may drop again on the next test, I wouldn't panic just yet. Did they also give you results for creatinine, phosphate and hct%?

This was not due to the chocolate. The blood test was done about 1.5 hours after eating chocolate and before they made her vomit.
It was a basic kidney blood test pre vomit treatment. I wasn't expecting them to find anything.
I've dropped a urine sample in this morning so waiting for result. Presumably it will be a thorough blood test after that.

I've read that she should have IV fluids. They offered it last night but I panicked and brought her home.
I'm absolutely distraught.

It was a basic kidney test, so not sure if they did the others last night. Urea was the only one in the red,
Ther have been no symptoms, it's come out of the blue.
I thought I had another 8-10 years with her, I can't imagine life without her. She's my special girl, she can read my mind. Sleeps next to me on my bed.

By an hour and a half the theobromine will certainly have started affecting her, which is no doubt why her urea was marginally over the normal level. Another blood test in a week, once all the effects of the chocolate have cleared her system (unusual to take bloods before inducing vomiting, normally that's done immediately without waiting for anything) will probably be down in the normal range again.

So I finally got a phone call back from the vets.
Urine was clear, re-test blood on Thursday.
Thanks for your replies, fingers crossed for Thursday.

Urea 7.4 today.
Panic over, but a reminder to enjoy every day with them as you never know when it’s the last day.
Thanks
