Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca)?

Has anyone got/had a dog with Dry Eye (Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca)? Did your dog manage on eye drops alone or did you have no option but to have the surgery done? If you had the surgery carried out, did it work and (if applicable) what was the long term outcome? I must admit that just the sound of the surgery scares the hell out of me

One of my dogs has this. He has optimumune ointment (very expensive from the vet, much cheaper online) he has not been offered surgery - interested to know what surgery you were offered. Why did your vet offer surgery?

Mine started with Protopic ointment, now on optimmune. He manages very well on it.

Thank you for your reply and information Merrypaws. It is very early days yet for my dog but I wanted to try and get as much information and other peoples experiences in case the day does come when he needs the surgery. Sadly his litter sister had to have the operation (parotid duct transposition) about 6 months ago because the various drops/ointment did not work. So far the surgery has been a success for her.

The surgery redirects the saliva tubes in the mouth in to the eye and then the saliva keeps the eye moist. I'm a tad squeamish where eyes are concerned and the thought of the surgery scares me to death. Obviously it would be a last resort if everything else fails. I am hoping that it will not be necessary but I am not confident, knowing his sister had to have it. I just wondered if anyone else had first hand experience. The fact that your dog manages well on his treatment makes me feel a bit better about my dog, so thank you.
