One of my Basset's numerous seb.cysts has just burst (boy what a mess!).   Believe it or not, I've very rarely had this happen with any of mine in the past so I need a little advice.   I've cleaned the area with diluted Hibiscrub and got as much out as I feel I can but would you take him to his vet for a/b or would a good clean with Hibiscrub be enough?

Take to the vets the sack has to be removed as it will return, it might need stitches my dogs did and a antibiotic shot.  The hole it leaves can be very deep and bigger than what you think, even though I thought I had it emptied it wasn't the vet got more out, it burst during the night and your right what a mess, but keeping it clean is a good start

Thanks - yes I seem to remember with cysts that the sack will refill but as this dog has a heart murmur, I'm loath to have him given a g/a, if that would be needed to remove the sack?   And yes, the hole, which isn't THAT big, is still there and I got some more yuck out just now.

I think I'll have to see the vet (again!) with this latest.

I was told by my vet, some years ago when I had GSDs, that operating was no use as they still came back. I used to squeeze the gunk out and bathe in salt water. The only one that was really large I packed with calendula cream. It had to heal from the bottom up as, if the top healed first it would just refill

My old fella has had what I think may be one of these erupt underneath a fore foot. It appeared quite suddenly over Thursday/Friday, - I had trimmed his nails earlier in the week, and I know it wasn't there then. He is only lame when he trots, - I hoped it might be a thorn, but batheing has made no difference, so it's off to the vet tomorrow.
My only other experience of dermoid cysts was my last Lurcher, who had them on her side and on the root of her tail. She self-operated on the tail overnight and, as you say Mamabas, the mess was awful, - we ended up opting for amputation. She was a teenager with grade 4-5 murmer, but came through it OK. Unfortunately she started with a sino-nasal cancer just a few months later.

Thank you for all the replies.   It looks less angry this morning, although obviously is refilling.  What a pain these are.   We hardly ever had these with our homebreds although we did have one who fast as we had them removed, managed to produce others.  They didn't ever let go however.    Her litter brother had none of that but her coat seemed denser and rather more 'greasy' than his.  In the end, we left them alone (my then vet didn't see much point keeping taking them off and she was right) unless one got big and in a difficult place.   I don't think I'm going to rush to the vet (again!) with this.   My current vets don't seem keen on touching his masses although the one he usually sees did a fine needle aspiration (aspirate?) on a big one near his tail onset.  I'd rather he'd actually drained it, but again, he didn't seem interested in doing that.

Update.   Well after how many days of treating with diluted Hibiscrub I have still been getting gloop out of the hole so this pm I took him in to see my vet who is saying it's an abscess.   Reading up on this it seems a cyst 'can' turn into an abscess - infection.    He's not reacting at all to treatment so no pain which with an abscess I'd have expected - his vet shaved a bigger area round it, and gave it a good cleaning with Hibiscrub and he's now on  6 days of good old Clavaseptin (500 mgs, one twice a day).   I was asked to phone them on Saturday morning to give a progress report in case the a/b needs to be changed (if there's no sig. improvement).   As he'll only have had 3 tablets (plus the one first thing Saturday) I'm probably going to leave it until Monday morning.

Hum.   He, vet, did ask whether I felt taking a sample of what in there but sending it off to the Lab = more cost.   Let's hope the a/bs do the job,
