We are thinking about importing a dog from eastern Europe and taking a long holiday so we could pick her up at 8 weeks and remain in Europe until the Pet Passport is done and we can return at 15 weeks. (This is forgetting about Brexit and hoping that things don't get silly or at least return to status quo quickly.)
We would rent a property for 2 months and see it as an extended holiday. BUT - I would like to rent/stay somewhere more familiar to me than her home country in Eastern Europe - somewhere a bit closer to home.
If we were to rent a place in France (say - but could be any other western European country I guess), could we drive there without a Pet Passport with an 8wk pup? (Does anyone check road borders between countries anyway??)

As far as I'm aware, you might be wise to carry a Health Certificate for travel between European countries (and for sure, last time we flew to Austria and hired a car, travelling between Austria and Germany, we saw no manned border control) but you will need Pet Passport to bring the pup into the UK which is really the only reason for PP, to prevent rabies coming in. Many countries are now looking on Pet Passport in the same way as a human Passport however.
Clearly rabies vaccination won't be given to a young puppy ...... we had our hounds done at 4 months when living in Canada.
Passport to bring the pup into the UK which is really the only reason for PP, to prevent rabies coming in
And Echinococcus which doesn't exist in the UK.

Looking at the list your options are limited, most of Western Europe doesn't accept young pups without their rabies, Germany, France, NL, Belgium - all No.

Looking at the list, I can stay in Switzerland or Austria until the Pet Passport is done?
Not sure what the replies are about the UK and rabies and tapeworm - that is about the Pet Passport, which we would have done before returning to the UK.

When we brought our three dogs back from Italy they had to be wormed not more than 48hours and not less than 24hrs before coming to uk. This had to be verified by a vet on their vaccination booklets. This was 9 years ago so dont know if anything has changed since then.
Again, that's the Pet Passport. We would comply with the Pet Passport before returning to the UK. We can't enter the UK with a Pet Passport until the puppy is about 15wks. If we collect the puppy at 8wks, I want to know if I can travel by land to other EU countries to wait the rest of the time out whilst we do rabies jabs etc.
Not sure everyone gets what I'm asking about...
This might explain things re young animals
That's the link I posted above...
There are no checks between European countries. I recently travelled with a dog to Hungary and back. Nothing checked outbound AT ALL! scary when you think a dog could be stolen and moved abroad without any border check whatsoever.
Between countries nothing other than tolls and entry charges and that's just people they are interested in.
Coming home we had the check in Calais before eurotunnel but that is the only check in a very long journey (England, France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and back again)
Wow, thanks - that sounds very like the journey we would take, only at the end just inside Slovakia instead. That's very good to know!
