Hello
We have had puppies dew claws removed on day 3.
One puppy had 6 toes on their hind leg! The vet warned the site may look worse than the others about 5 days post removal. We are now on day 2 post removal and whilst the others have ‘scabbed’ this wound seems to be open and slightly smelly!
Has anyone had any experience of this? If so, is salty water acceptable to dab on and dry off to encourage the site to dry out?
Help would be most appreciated.

I would take advise from the vet. Last thing you need is an infection

Obviously there should be no residual open wound or smell. Yes mildly salted water could be used, but the puppy should be checked by the vet who did the removal in case antibiotics are needed, even at this tender age. Has mum been licking at the wound?

I would use the salt water solution too or diluted TCP to clean it then cover when dry with a bandaid to try keep clean.

Use diluted Hibiscrub, way more capable of fighting infection than salty water. Dab it on the wound 5-6 times a day.
Smelly is not good, it should not be smelly. Even wounds that take longer to heal they should be clean. I would also watch the mother, and if she is licking the puppy's wound then you can put a small plaster loosely over the wound. You will then need to remove and replace it each time you apply disinfectant.
The pup will likely need some ABs - they can go downhill really fast with infections. Don't risk it.
