Hi all, I have a client that has a two year old labrador that has neurological problems. Her vet has diagnosed neospora. The dog has never been raw fed, he has put the dog on a course of antibiotics for six months. This sounds strange to me, any ideas gratefully received. We are in the USA for a few years and it is totally different here regarding vet treatments. Thank you

From PetMed (one of several online websites I checked)
"Living and Management

Neosporosis must be treated with the appropriate medications, as prescribed by your veterinarian, for an extended period of time. It is important to administer medications properly for the entire recommended time period."

Sounds like a long time to be on A/Bs but I suppose you can only be guided by your vet - you are entitled to take a second opinion.

I am sorry, it's a very nasty parasitic disease that can be transmitted through eating faeces  that contain the parasite very similar to toxoplasmosis gondii not just from eating affected raw meat . If the vet knows his stuff he will know the clinical differences between the two
Maybe a second opinion  but it does need treating properly and fast from what I  know.
There are a number of articles in Google that can give information as well as at least one case on u tube of the recovery of a dog with neospora.not nice viewing at the beginning so be warned
For anyone worrying freezing any meat fpr a week in a domestic freezer before feeding kills the parasite.
We arnt at risk from this as it only affects canines and most of our meat is either previously frozen or cooked. The parasite is found mainly in beef .and affected livestock can abort calves

One of our clients' dogs (kibble-fed) contracted neospora while staying on a farm during a family holiday. She too needed many months of antibiotic treatment but eventually made a good recovery.

Thank you all very much. I have passed this onto the clients.
