Hi, Could anyone please help/advice with the worming of a pregnant bitch?
My bitch is not pregnant yet but i am just gathering all the information up that i need & ensuring she & her potential future litter have the best healthy start possible.
My bitch is a Samoyed weighing 18kg. The research i have done says Panacur are the only worming treatment that can be safely used when pregnant and for pups; but the dosage, how i am working it out, just seems very extreme & high?
According to hyperdrug.co.uk the panacur the dosages for 22.2%w/w {4.5g sachets} are:
1 g sachet /dose - Treats 8kg (17.6lb) body weight dosed daily for approx. 25 days
1.8 g sachet / dose - Treats 16kg (35.2lb) body weight dosed daily for approx. 25 days
So my question is how much per day would my bitch need from day 40? I have worked out she would need 2g sachet PER DAY? This just seems VERY high to be every day.
Please can any one explain this to me further.
Big thankyou in advance!

I've never used the Panacur granules, but instead use the Panacur liquid. Much easier to work out the correct dose.

After the first time, when I didn't know better, we always wormed our bitches BEFORE being mated. And then again when the puppies were first wormed, at week 2.
You can't use the Panacur granules with pregnant bitches as far as I know - you need to use the Panacur 10%. The information on the dosage is with the leaflet that comes with the Panacur but you start it at day 40 of pregnancy I think.
Not everyone worms during pregnancy. Either way, worm with a normal adult dose when the bitch first comes into season.

This last time i did a wormcount being that she was wormed about 1 month prior to mating and it was clear so didn't worm during pregnancy.

The purpose of the worming regime from day 40 is to minimise the transfer of encysted larva that are activated during pregnancy due to hormones and pass through the placenta to unborn pups. this can be reduced by 98%.
A worm count will not identified encysted larva.

I did it at day 40 for 3 days worth of poo for worm count. It was clear and no wormy pups either
