Today I found a pregnant pitbull under my home. And when I say pregnant I mean very pregnant. She is a very sweet dog but unfortunately I live in an area that is known as a dog dumping ground. I  can feel the puppies moving and she has very large mammary glands and hasn't left my side I was able to take her temperature earlier today and it was 97.7 not sure if it's because she's about to go into labor or if it's because she's just cold. And of course it's Sunday so can't call the vet. Any help is greatly appreciated.  I do have her inside now and she seems to be happy.

Hi Call animal control at the sheriffs office in your area, they will be able to take her off for you. We often have beagles dumped here, 4 in last few months and animal control come straight out

Many pit bulls are put to sleep so I don't want to have to send her to animal control or the humane society. If she's as far along as I think she will probably be more comfortable having the puppies in a home instead of a cage with no one paying any attention to her

I use to volunteer at the animal shelter here and the way they treat the animals is horrible. And I can't do that to an animal.  No animal deserves to be dumped like trash and then put in a cage and ignored.

This is a UK based dog forum and pitbulls are illegal in this country.  It may well be that nobody here can give you any really helpful advice.  So sorry.

Although the oP is not UK based if she intends to keep.the dog while she has her pups maybe she can be given advice on whelping ? How she deals with the situation after that will be down to what is available locally

That is true, but I am certain that there are members here who can help with the basics of a bitch due to whelp and what needs to be done. Let's help if we can

Don't know where you are in the States but try connecting with 'Villalobos Rescue Center' they do the TV show Pitbulls & Parolees.
They are based in New Orleans but travel most of the US for both rescues and to rehome, they also seem to have contacts everywhere.

if you can try and get a hold of a copy of the Book of the Bitch, it will be most helpful regarding whelping and rearing.

Feel free to ask us any questions you have any any time :)  I think you are doing an amazing service to be taking in a dog in need like this and she will be far more comfortable whelping in your home than in a rescue kennel.

I hope all goes well for you and thank you for your good deed.
