My girl had her litter yesterday (medium sized gundog breed) and one of the pups has a very large tongue that I noticed immediately when born. He can get it all in his mouth at times and seems to be feeding ok but the edges are visible most of the time and seem to be drying out.

Google suggested macroglossia which it seems it could be, though is not as extreme as some of the images shown.

Has anyone experienced this? I am worried what it will be like as he grows. Searching seems to suggest it can be linked to underlying conditions but doesn’t really suggest what...

I would suggest maybe this little one needs a vet visit or at least them visit your home and can check mum and other pups at the same time.

Of course I will take him to the vets if he makes it over the next few days. I don’t think there is any point in taking him straight away if he is doing ok, as I can’t see that they can do anything for him, certainly not at the moment.
