> A friend of mine who used to be a vet nurse told me general anaesthesia is not essential for scale and polish, can be done under sedation.
It SHOULD be possible but why risk sedation not working when you'd get more for the job using a g/a - the cynic in me. In Canada, years ago now, a g/a wasn't used nearly as often as it is here (UK) - coupled with the fact that my vet(s) out there welcomed my involvement in treating my hounds - even with a C.Section (when it was obvious that there was just light g/a given). I remember, however, being removed from the scene when one of mine went very grey (gums) during the surgery and they had to work hard to get her back. I found it difficult to accept the door from waiting area to operating room being shut, with me on the 'wrong' side.
I might query this need for a g/a with my lad IF I decided to go ahead and get a dental done ..... they did mention flushing out his ears whilst under, and he has a couple of growing skin tags (if that's the word) which I'd want them to take off.
Human procedures are usually supported by the NHS. If only we could do the same with pets (insurance apart). I recently had an extraction with sedation = £65. Now I've managed to be accepted in the most recent NHS Patients influx where I go, that should be less in future.
ps I watched one of the vet programmes I'd recorded (Yorkshire vets) where an elderly pony was having dental treatment including an extraction and boy did the vet have to battle to get the 'loose tooth' out (under a local). I hate to think what that bill looked like.
