Hi we own a male and female French bulldog. Completely naively we thought it would be fine to get her spayed after her 1st season as she wouldn’t let our dog near her what we didn’t realise was that there is almost a 2nd part to the season where she did let him and we caught them in the act and they did tie. I feel awful and did look into the injection but after reading the side effects we decided we would deal with the outcome whatever it maybe. My question is she would nearly be 2.5 weeks pregnant now and her nipples are bigger but other than that she seems fine. I came home today and she has done a wee with a small amount of blood in it. Is this normal or should I be taking her to the vet.

I would highly recommend taking her right back to the vet for the injections.  I'm not sure what side effects you've read about, but there are rarely any side effects with the Alizin injection - and definitely far fewer than carrying a pregnancy to term.

The breed you have described there, is highly likely to need a c-section and the cost for this can run into thousands.  They are also prone to health issues and breeding stock should be fully health-tested before being bred - for the sake of the puppies. 

Unless you have an awful lot of money put aside for the whelping and puppy-raising, as well as a suitable home to endure the mess (a lot) and noise (ditto) of a litter of puppies, not to mention the full time job of cleaning up and raising the litter, I would highly recommend the Alizin injection.  It can be given up to 45 days after mating, so you are well in time...

She is far too young to have a litter if this is her first season. The breed have numerous if complications at birth and some bitches do die when giving birth.
The breed need numerous of health tests for the breed and that isnt a vet check.
Please do take her in and get the alizin jab, there are very few side effects from this and far safer then letting her at a tender age, assuming she is just a puppy herself have this litter.
With all the new breeding laws which have come in too you may need a licence too.
Best thing all round and especially for your girls health is to give the jab and not let any potential pregnancy continue

I'm an experienced breeder of toys, and they are notoriously difficult to whelp.  If you wouldn't recognise inertia, your bitch would be at risk.  One of my girls mated when I didn't want to breed from her.  (Patella problems that I would no way pass on.)

She had the Alizin injection and had no problems at all, I would highly recommend it.  I then had her spayed 12 weeks later.  This would be ideal for your girl.

As to your concerns - years ago the drugs used were risky.  I have never heard of anyone having problems with Alizin.  Go for it.    You won't regret it.

Agree with the others, please take her in right away and get the jab, it is very safe and much safer than allowing a puppy to have puppies on her 1st season!

Physically and behaviourally it's much safer to give the Alizin injections to prevent any possible pregnancy (at this stage the embryos haven't implanted) and spay at the correct time, whe the blood supply to the uterus is at its normal level and the bitch's hormones aren't all over the place. Spaying at this stage is likely to trigger a phantom pregnancy that can last for many months, and the ovaries are more difficult to remove intact because they are very friable; fragments can easily be left behind to continue functioning.

Yes, but given that a mis-mate inj. doesn't always work - the (very slight) risks with a gravid spay, or a whelping which may need a C.Section?   Provided you trust your vet I know which I'd be doing, especially if spaying was planned in any case.   A phantom doesn't have to last 'for many months' although once a bitch starts having these, my experience has been they tend to have these after every season until they are spayed.

The side effects of Alizin  are minimal . I have never noticed any.Breeding from such a young bitch in such a random way could mean she dies and so do any puppies. It’s really not worth the risk to your bitch.
Your responsibility to your pet is always to do the best you can for  her.
Letting a pregnancy proceed when you have no experience yourself or any knowledge of what lies behind the breeding of both dogs is a risk that you  don’t have to take.

Mamabas as Alizin is 100% effective at the stage of pregnancy this bitch would be at, there's no reason to worry about it not working.

Whether you go for a gravid spay or the Alizin injection, we seem to be in 100% agreement that the pregnancy shouldn't continue and the choice about which would be best, should be made with your vet.

It's when the injections are given in the later stages that the effect isn't always complete; in this early stage side-effects and inefficacy are almost (only a fool would say never) unheard-of. As your own research told you "If given before day 22 of a pregnancy Alizin is almost 100% effective" - and that's the stage this bitch is at. The risks to health are a lot less than whelping.

A normal phantom that bitches have after a season doesn't - usually a month at most - but the abnormal one triggered by spaying during pregnancy, when the hormone levels suddenly collapse rather than wane naturally, have been known to last 6 months and even more. Spaying midway between seasons, in the anoestrus period, doesn't have this effect and completely eliminates phantoms.

It appears you know very little about breeding and the bitches cycles.

A bitch does not permit mating until the mid to end part of her season, the first part prepares things,a dn thebn hormone levels rise to the point of ovulation and then mating takes place.

This is a breed not for the Novice breeder.

Please get the Alizin injection.  You may be getting mixed up with the old mismate injection, which did carry side effect.

Alizin can just cause a bit of discomfort at the injection site.  It is usual to give it after the season ahs finished in two parts 48 hours apart, so the timing is just fine.
