Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Hip score cost?
- By annieg3 [gb] Date 03.10.18 08:50 UTC
I just had my 13 month old hip scored. She had her booster at the same time. I was shocked when I was presented with a bill for £307. Two days later I had a call to say they had forgotten to charge for the x-ray being sent away for the scoring. Another £65. It's five years since I had a hip score done. I was expecting around £200 for score plus booster. Am I totally behind the times? Is this the usual cost now?

Small wonder you rarely see a poor vet!!   I know over the years since my last buy in hounds, I've kept various of mine in new cars, at least.

The saying having a dog is a luxury, not a necessity is TOTALLY TRUE!

I'd be phoning round for costs next time much as there's not anything you can do other than pay up this time.

Man. I was charged £210 but that also included spine xrays and for some reason they didn't do the spine in one x-ray like they did with my girl. So that was 3 xrays and bva fee

I paid £360 recently for hip score.

I paid around £400 for hips and elbows over 1 year ago.

Right, well it seems to be how much it costs these days. Crikey. Thank you.

The BVA cost is £66 inc VAT for scoring; vet fees for x-rays vary, but I'd expect a minimum of £200 - more if the first x-rays aren't good and need to be repeated.

You need to shop around and also if they do it under GA that puts the prices up too. The places which do it under a light sedation and very frequently are much cheaper, like southern canine imaging but there are others about. Vets who do it infreqently are likely to charge more.

That's interesting. My normal vet has just retired. The vets taking over are very young. That's fine but I wonder if my much more experienced vet just used sedation.

yep that' about the cost and more here in Bristol with a GA, which is one reason many of us try and find a vet who will do it under sedation which takes about £150 off the cost. It will be double with elbows.

I'm thinking it must have been a ga. I think I'll ask for a breakdown just to see what it all cost. I was already a bit miffed as my vet retired without telling any of her customers as she didn't want a fuss. 14 years I'd been to her. 4 dogs so lots of money spent. I thought that was rude but that's another topic so will shut up.

I pay £110 plus BVA fee for hips. Many ‘general’ vets charge a very high fee, as you have found!

I recently paid c. £250 including BVA fee for hips on my standard poodle. Had some quotes that were not far off double that!

and you can double it if doing elbows too.
