I was researching purchasing a lab. Someone I was speaking to stated that in their litter they had one white lab. They said it was more rare than the rest and he was asking more money for the dog. I thought that labs came in yellow and chocolate. Is this person taking advantage of someone who doesnt know too much about labs?

As far as I can see , then yes. Labradors come in Yellow , Chocolate and Black. There are several well versed Labrador people here on the forum and they will be able to tell you more , but it has been discussed here before that an *unusual* colour dog should not command more money than a regular colour one.

Don't touch them with a barge pole Steve, they are only interested in money not dogs. Labs come in Yellow, Black and Brown, and no breeder who knows the breed and therefor knows what they are doing would either call a Lab by any other colour or try to make extra money because a particular pup happened to be a light yellow, if it were to be registered it would still say yellow on it's registration. Unless the KC still register dogs a non-standard, if that is what you want. :)

I agree with everyone else, this individual is just trying to 'make money'. "Yellow" labs come in such light shades occasionally as to be considered 'buff'...but they still fall under "Yellow" category.

However, if this dog is truly "white," it could be an albino which can happen. It would be basically white with pink skin -- eyes wouldn't be as dark and quite possibly red. It would still not make the dog 'rare' or 'valuable'. It's a major fault and will likely have health problems throughout the rest of its life :(

Someone I work with who heard I was looking for a Lab puppy told me about something similar - in the litter there was one pure white puppy but which as far as they could see wasn't an albino because it had dark eyes ( :D I could just imagine it looking like one of those arctic seal pups!). Sadly, whether it was the unusual colour or something more, the mother rejected it and it had to be hand reared. They were offering it free to a good home but I was far too scared of taking on the complete unknown for my first dog to take him up on the offer. Last I heard it was doing well :D :)

Hi Steve

As the others have said AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE no Reputable Breeder would call a Labradors colour as White. They are as already stated - Yellow, Brown and Chocolate.

If you need any further help in finding another Reputable Breeder have a look at this site The Labrador Retriever Club
