When feeding a puppy rice for an upset tummy does fresh rice need to be cooked every meal time or can it be cooked in bulk and served cold and or heated up?

How old is pup ? Is it weaned ? If so I would  feed either small amounts of boiled cooked chicken or cooked white fish .only cook in water no salt egg and I wouldn't use rice at all . Small frequent meals and make sure pup is well hydrated .u can  add some of the cooking water to the meal to help hydration. How long gas pup had upset tummy ? Any idea what could of caused it ? In a young dog it's probable best to see a vet as they  can go down hill faat

Hello

Yes she is weaned 10 weeks old, she has been to the vets this morning and it was they who had suggested the rice, I will certainly try a little white fish and chicken also- thanks for the advice!

Boiled rice can be frozen successfully BUT given how little a puppy of that age should need, I'd only make enough for a day's feeding, if you use it at all.   Rice and poached chicken breast, or white fish is normally suggested, BUT I tend to avoid rice if I can because it goes EVERYWHERE and when I've had to use it, I've spent a long time picking the flicked bits up off the floor.  If this is just an uncomplicated tummy upset, try adding a little natural, unflavoured yogurt - if you can source goats yog which is more available these days, so much the better.   And yes, use the stock the chicken/fish is cooked in (just a little) to help with hydration.   No salt!!

Also buy some Pro-Kolin, great thing to keep in the fridge. Vets sell it but usually triple the price, so better get it online or if you have Manor Pharmacy near you or similar shop with reasonable prices.

I never use rice but find mashed potato with no milk or butter added and boiled chicken is the best.

I feed raw and start weaning at 2.5 weeks on to it. I never get any runny tummies at all !!

Also are you sure your not overfeeding???  This will cause loose bowel movements.

Certainly not saying it's a common occurrence, but I had a rescue dog a few years ago that arrived with a very upset tummy. The vet advised chicken and rice but she just got worse, eventually turned out that she was allergic to rice!, just mentioned it as a bit of a warning to bear in mind, hope you pup dries up soon
