my 2  half year old gets pregnant but then reabsorbs the litter .puts weight on about 33 days then goes skinny by day 40 ish or so.has been scanned on both occassions and showed absorbing.wont be in season again till next june time.does anyone have any tips to help avoid it please.im going to try one more time next year then if no joy ill get her spayed and she will stay with me as a pet.

Did you use the herpes vaccine? 

If not then I would definitely do so. 

Was it the same stud dog, could there be a genetic incompatibility if so.

Of course she simply could not be producing enough hormones to maintain the pregnancy, this is not something you would want to breed on from if it turns out to be the case.  If it has just happened then I would get a blood test sent to Idexx to see if her progesterone levels have dropped prematurely.

How many times has this happened?  It sounds like more than once. 

At the very least, I would ensure she has the CHV vaccine - whatever type of mating she has.  It must be given twice.

But ideally you would have a consult with a repro vet to talk about what's happening.  If she lacks enough progesterone to continue the pregnancy, progesterone supplementation may be needed.  But then you would need to ask yourself if this is a congenital issue and if you should be breeding from her...

I'm just wondering why you did AI and yet will consider normal mating next time.  I would always do a natural mating wherever possible. 

If this is going to be your final try, I would suggest ovulation testing to find optimum mating day/s and give the CHV vaccine.  Try an experienced stud dog who's handler knows what they're doing and can give you good advice throughout.

My first bitch failed to have a litter after the first 2 matings, changed stud dog and she absolutely adored him - result 7 puppies!

I hope not, would only think it necessary for imported semen.

Some of the commercial breeders in Frenchy/bulldog/pugs have starting their own AI clinics so I'd say it's becoming more common in those breeds, either that or now the kc have lifted the restrictions there more open about doing it.

I think you may be right there!   As said, in N.America this is done far more often, for reasons from avoiding the risk of infection with a popular stud dog, to if you have to travel the vast distances over there, at least with an A1 you 'get something there' whilst trying for a natural mating.   I contributed to this (travelling from Toronto down to just outside Philadelphia) when we used a nice Am.Ch. I wanted for her.
