Topic Dog Boards / General / High Velocity 18'' Plus Fans

This mornings 'severe' weather forecast warning in London area this morning made me think of something I have never seen mentioned on UK dog media sources & that is 18'' plus 'High Velocity' fans.
I only discovered the huge (comparative) benefits to comfort, including 'noticeable' breathing ease, last year when I first bought a black one on top of the pedestal & other fans Homebase 'type' fans I had used in years before.
When discussions of keeping dogs cool in hot weather I have never heard them mentioned at all, not ever, but I have no doubts they make a significant, beneficial difference to animals.
The only other I can think of to add to add is that I chose one with the higher 'wattage', and an 18'' plus size, not because they are faster but higher wattage does have more power & will probably wear a lot less, also, I don't find them to noisy, they can be bought at Screwfix if theres one near but based on last year I think that with these severe hot weather warnings they will sell out quick & might not be easily sourced, they did last year.

I have this week, bought my very first fan for the dogs. Not needed in the past but as the weather conditions change and everything heats up then I think more of us will be investing in fans. Do you find the fan you recommend eats electricity though?

I don't think it eats 'lecy but I dont 'know for sure', I never noticed any difference last year so I take that as a guideline, I think fans in domestic households are not a common thing but a couple of people (3) bought these last year after seeing mine.
Certainly with the air 'noticeably' circulating & changing all the time they are on it must have a favorable impact on all pet animals.

I'd like to see what the difference is between this High Velocity fan, and a normal big oscilating fan, as the one I currently have, from a company my husband worked for who was moving and replacing old fans.    I like it that it moves from side to side.   I have a small similar for the windowcill in my bedroom at night and both are very quiet.

Does anybody have info. on the dif. between the HV fan and a 'normal' one?

It's a complicated answer 'cause it involves science physics, convection, molecules atoms etc etc, but, to answer the 'high velocity' part & in lay terms, they move massive 'quantities/volumes' of air compared to 'normal' store fans plus they can also 'push' it further to an exit, such as an open window, if a window (mine) is facing the sun in afternoon I put up those silver car heat reflectors Ive laced together & they just reflect the heat & don't allow it in, they are better than anything a fail safe really, but, a bit of daily messing about.

The link is to a short starter article to start understanding it, anyone can research further, from personal experience/perception of mine, it does move massive amounts of air away from any room I'm occupying at a time. I also have a standing oscilating fan mamabass but the 18'' plus high velocity fans are in a completely different league.

I have two fans on stands, four small table fans for the house, outside two cool coats, one large cool mat and four cage fans

We have an industrial I think 24inc one at work as the animal rooms were getting too hot last year (it looks like it's the sealey one, 3 rd on that list). However it can't be used when teaching as it makes so much noise the students wouldn't be able to hear. Other than noise it cools the rooms down well but I find just a normal type and sized fan is plenty in the house, open the windows and our rooms are nice and cool, no need for a big fan here. Unlike work where the windows don't open and some things have heat lamps/mats in them.

Despite having an 18" Oscillating fan which doesn't owe us anything as we've had it for years and it could break at any time, I've just bought the 'last one' of a batch of Buy it Now HV fans on ebay.   It's due Wed. or Thursday next week - you can count of the weather easing by then

18" Oscillating fan

Its the HV speed & I think also the'design' of the metal blade which makes the difference, I have a 14'' pedestal fan  (had it for years) which is fine in warm weather but once we get these unusual spells of very hot weather its almost ineffective, glad you got the HV now, last year everyone had sold out (even screwfix) when I started trying to get one but when I eventually got it I 'felt' the difference.

We have just had an 18 inch HV fan delivered from EBay and what a difference it has made. So much better than any other fans.
Many thanks to the person who recommended them. Dogs are loving it.....

18 inch HV fan delivered from EBay

Of interest (maybe).
My living room was warm this morning but I tried an experiment, there was nothing in fridge which would spoil so I opened the door & put the fan in front of the open door & aimed to blow the air into passage (works like a tunnel) to living room, it caused a light breeze & took about 5 mins before living room was to cold, as I say it was just a curiosity experiment but I've had to put blower heater on just for few mins to warm it back up again...enjoy

If you run a fan over a bowl of iced water it will cool the air effectively

> glad you got the HV now, last year everyone had sold out

This was why I went ahead and bought !!     I saw people walking out of Morrisons on Thursday with fans!
