I have a 10 month puppy who I have had since 5 months. I have shown her twice and they say she is pacing. I have notice that if she is free running either over the field or in the garden at any speed she move correctly and with good drive and reach but as soon as you put a lead on her she paces. I have tried several things with not a lot of success can anyone come up with any other ideas I would be really grateful

Usually altering speed will fix it, either move slower or faster? Don't ever let her do it, go back and start again each time, depending how sensitive she is (i.e. if she's not that sensitive) then a check of the collar and return and start again and she should learn that's not what you want.

Agreed!    It's frustrating when you get one who moves fine, outside the ring.   One of my boys would move out really well in the field, but get him the ring and it was quite different - tied in front, not reaching as he should.   He was one of the best moving hounds we'd bred, going away.  He would win his class, but then came up against the CC record holder in the breed and NOBODY got past him when he was being campaigned.  Too many good dogs never gained their title during that dog's 'reign of terror'

As you first move off, try doing a tight circle and away immediately. That should force her to choose the correct leg. I do agree though you must find the right speed for her.

A lot of dogs find pacing a comfortable & economical way of walking.
It is fairly easy to get them out of it by walking slightly faster & sometimes it doesn't take that much faster to break them out of it. You will in some cases (depending on what size of dog)  need another to say when they aren't pacing.... this person has to be one who actually recognises the pace gait...yes I have come across those who don't know what pace gait is!!

Bassbar O'Sullivan? I beat him in the group once, at Southern Counties, '92 I think, my boy won the group and he was reserve, it was a very proud moment for me

Yep - with two r's.   Should have said nobody got past him'at breed level'   Although that wasn't strictly accurate because I didn't give him a CC!!  But then he was 'over the hill' by then.   He was beaten on the odd occasion, even in the Breed - noteably I believe, at Crufts one year.   It was frustrating to have him out for such a long time tho.    For us with otherwise good dogs!
